A guide to removing the alternator

Supra Gaz

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know, my alternator died recently, I haven't mentioned it much I know. I am going to remove my current one and have it rebuilt, seems the easiest option now.

Soooo can someone give me a guide on how to remove the blooming thing, I'm guessing remove ancillary belt and then the alternator? Do you have to whip anything else off? And how do you loosen (and tighten) the ancillary belt tightener? I tried searching and only got bits and bobs, as these things go at least once on a car it would be useful to have a good 'how to'.

Cheers folks, I may even fling some haribo your way if all goes well, tangtastic if you wondering.

Remove negative terminal from battery

Place 14mm socket and ratchet (longer the easier) on the centre of the aux belt tensioner with the ratchet handle horizontal and pointing towards the battery.

Lean down on the handle and the tensioner will slacken - fair amount of force required so mind those fingers when you flip the belt off and release the pressure (do so steadily as the tensioner moves a fair way up once the belt has gone).

Under a rubber/plastic cover (think its on top of the alternator) you need to undo an nut that links it to the loom/wiring.

Then it's x2 bolts to remove, top one is easy/visible, bottom one can be fiddly to find (easy to see/undo from underneath but I don't think that's essential).

It's not light and access is an issue so have a think before you go for the final removal (in fact i'm now not certain that i didn't both undo the lower bolt and remove the alternator from underneath the car?)

I did mine on an NA so access is likely to be even tighter for you.
