Guest columbo
For most of us that tax every 3 months = Supra: 392 euro to 450 euro! 1800 euro per year yeah same here...i only tax it every 3 months for the €392.. now €1800- rapists !!! might do 3 months on 3 months off. Guest columbo
Has anybody here looked into going commercial ? tax would be around €300 for the year. heres a few links i found , including "commercial supras" for sale in Ireland. http://www.adverts.ie/car/cars/other-cars/95-toyota-supra-tt-commercial/203078 http://car.donkiz-ie.com/used-cars/supra-breaking.htm http://car.donkiz-ie.com/used-cars/supra-swap.htm http://www.dtdirl.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-65167.html http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055759047&page=
nige-rz
I'm sure pretty much every Irish member has thought about it at one point or another but long story short I don't think it'll work. If you do manage to jump through a million and one hoops and get the car registered as a commercial vehicle you'll get nothing but hassle from the guards I'd imagine. I've a mate with a Porsche Cayenne commercial and he gets hassle whenever he's stopped....can only imagine this would be 10x worse in a Supra. In saying all the above it might be worth it. I use my car couple of months out of the year, so chances of going through a roadblock are even unlikely. Let me know how you get on if you do it to yours! JasonR24
that is the most rediculous tax iv ever seen! how do they get away with that!?! i would expect people to just stay at home and not got to work!
Jellybean
One of my friends (John) had his Supra commercially registered; DOE time and the guy at the center was a real $%££$. He insisted he have Toyota headed paper indicating the weight of the car; he would not accept a print out from a weigh bridge, it had to be Toyota official, Of course Toyota would not give him anything, he get a friendly DOE'r in the end. Nigel tried a couple of years back to get his changed from private to commercial, the guy in the local government office said no. Even though it had all the relevant regulations implemented to cover it as a commercial vehicle. You are taking about 1K. Not too sure if Nigel did go down solicitor route or not but I think the guy in the office told him he would inform the guards if he did it. You may get away with it in some area's but not in a big city like Dublin, if you are stopped once ; you will be a target Commercial Vehicles by law should only be driven between business hours 9-5; outside of these hours you need to prove you are still working if pulled. It was never enforced over here but they are clamping down. I reckon you will have better luck registering the car on NI plates
Guest columbo
Thanks for the feedback chaps, sounds like it would be way more hassle than it is worth. i used to have a commercial jeep on the road for the yaer and just bring the supra out for the summer months..but i had to sell the jeep with the recession an all that. There is no way i am paying our sham government €1800 a year road tax , ill have to come up with another cunning plan...
Jellybean
The guy who lives next to my parents has all his cars on NI plates last few years , no issues; In Ireland you don't deregister your car so if customs do say anything just put your Irsh reg back on; you don't have to pay VRT again. If you are only driving her the odd time like me; I say the chances of getting pulled is fairly remote. I got the pack from the DVLA with all the forms you need (Pack is free) , think it is around 25 gbp to register her. The only reservations I have is , Insurance, I am paying 650 euro full comp down here; talking to the guys up in NI insurance can be as high as 1000 gbp + ; this negates the saving in Motor tax plus the risk factor for only saving a few hundred is not worth it. If I did have to put her back on Southern plates, I am just afraid the insurance companies down here will not re-insure me at a reasonable premium; I am sure you know what they are like. My friend in NI just bought a house so I was waiting till he bought something before I could look into Insurance prices (needed the post code) ; but this was the show stopper for me. I heard anywhere in around Belfast area it is a nightmare to get insurance If pulled my argument for Customs is I have my second car (Polo 1000cc) on Southern plates ; I just bring down the Supra from NI the odd time. I know they do take you PPSI number and verify if you work down south. Good luck trying to argue have a Supra on NI plates if you live in Cork . I am practicing my NI accent But Colin in SSI(Supra Specialists Ireland) will get her MOT ready for you if you decide to go down this route Edited January 10, 2013 by Jellybean (see edit history)

Ill only be taxing my car for 3 months this year i reckon given the cost.
Suprab1
I'm thinking about putting uk plates back on my supra. I have garage insurance so that part won't effect me. The price of tax here is a joke.
