What Gauges for BPU

Sandy-m2

Recommended Posts

I have been reading the BPU thread and done a load of searching, I dont want to put any gauges in I dont need so wonder what most people recomend for BPU.

A boost gauge seems logical but is it better to have a AFR or EGT, The EGT looks like a pain to install on the stock engine but is it worth the benifit to know if im going to have a problem?

Thanks in Advance

Sandy

If anything boost. You need to know if your over boosting. afr is nice but not realy needed for bpu if you don't want a lot of guages. You could use the guage on the boost controller but mine is hard to read as the display flickers arround so much. I think Afr and egt basicly tell you the same thing. But egt is slower. As if your running the wrong Afr it takes longer for the egt to react where the Afr guage is immediate

Just a boost gauge is fine if you want to keep things minimal Sandy. Obviously AFR / EGT would be a bonus, but thinking along the same lines, you could argue that you also need oil pressure/temperature too.... you'd end up with a boat load of gauges you don't need.

BPU is tried and tested, as long as you're not overboosting you should be ok in my opinion. If you have the facility to set a max pressure warning on your gauge that would be helpful, but not essential. I used to have an alarm on my boost controller if it went over 1.2bar which automatically dialed the boost back a bit.

Thanks Kill, yeah i have an alarm on mine.

George - why are you going to put the AFR in?

Thanks

Sandy

Just to keep an eye on the air fuel ratio bud, just to be sure im running bang on the right mixture, this way i can see if there is a problem, and address it pronto. :)

Boost and Oil Pressure are the important ones I have.

See this is the thing, there seems to be people running different things but I dont know why, Obviously the more you monitor the safer you can be. but whats going to go first?

I didnt see the oil Pressure on the BPU page, whats the benifit?

I only use boost mate...don't even have a guage though...just use the boost controller mounted on the steerin column so easy to view as its just infront of the speedo etc. It had peak warning and flashes red if the car over boosts.

Coming up on two years without issue.:)

Oil pressure is a pretty crucial thing to be able to monitor. Wouldn't want the oil pump to fail or something to break or oil to leak/drain and not know about it until it is too late as oil starvation is pretty serious :)

Also, I made sure to have oil pressure even when stock, never mind BPU! Just to be safe! :)

Boost and AFR for me are required.

Oil temperature and oil pressure are nice to have.

If you're getting a Syvecs, I'd get them integrated to that and just let the Syvecs worry.

I would love a Syvecs, but am only going bpu, i've had the car 7 years and have worked hard at keeping it stock, just want to make sure if i BPU its done in a good way. The Syvecs looks amazing tho.

Yep. Boost is needed, and I'd do AFR to make sure you're not running lean anywhere.

If you needed an oil pressure as stock every car would have one from the factory. Which they don't.

Fair point, though it isn't a bad idea having one. Especially when going BPU as things (oil pump as a perfect example) are changing that will have an effect on oil pressure.

I probably monitor my oil pressure as much as I do my boost gauge, if not more.
