Are toyota steering wheels interchangeable.

My next project was to wire up the audio steering wheel controls, but it's been put on hold for the moment whilst I get the brakes and wheels sorted.

I found a 2012 Yaris that was being broken, contacted the breaker (http://www.motorhog.co.uk/) and got a price of £30 for the wiring harness - including all plugs - that connects the steering wheel controls to the central screen/audio unit. I've already bought an adapter harness off ebay that fits between the standard Toyota wiring loom and my Sony headunit. In theory it should all just plug together and work, whether it actually will I don't know :)

Thanks, let me know how you get on. I have pm'd Heckler to see if it is something he could put his skills to. I got the wheel and airbag for £200 and hope that it is not another of my stupid ideas that cost me a fortune!

What did you do about the airbag connection? Is it a straight fit or does it need an adaptor?

That's a good price for a wheel with a working airbag, most breakers sell the airbags as a complete car set and won't split them. I did price up a new airbag from http://www.airbagsforsale.com/ for my Yaris steering wheel but they wanted £250. Make sure you're sitting down if you ever ask Toyota for a quote for a new airbag :)

My MR2 never had airbags fitted, so I bought the steering wheel and a blown airbag. I cut away the airbag, bonded the airbag cover from behind then used 3M Di Noc CF vinyl wrap. The best mod I've made so far, the car came with a genuine Momo sport wheel which was way to small and awful to use, the new wheel has transformed the driving experience and look of the interior.

I do like the look of your steering wheel. Am just worried about connecting things up like airbag, cruise control, horn and all the radio stuff. Like you I just want to update the car with features that are on most modern cars. Has been a long summer of constant change on my car with led conversation, dash wrap, Bose speakers and pods and a whole lot of other stuff. Have stopped counting what I have spent on her over the past 8 months!

This is the e bay item that should be with me Friday!

You need an auto electrician such as Heckler who understands wiring diagrams.

The Auris steering wheel is a really good size, shape and profile, very comfortable to use, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I actually have a 2011 Auris steering wheel sat next to me here, it's up for sale but I don't have the airbag for it. My initial plan was to fit the Auris wheel on the MR2 but then I found the Yaris wheel with the blown airbag so ended up using that instead.

Update on the attempt to fit an Auris steering wheel. Was hoping that all controls would be up and running, but the slip ring on the supra is a different fitting to the auris. Only solution would be to get an auris slip ring and then the plug connectors from the loom behind. It would then appear that this could cause problems with the cowling. I would welcome any suggestions that might stop this from being another expensive !
