Front wheel noise

Hi all. I have a noise coming from my front wheel. It's intermittent but seems to be happening more often now. It starts when I'm moving generally over 50 and increases/decreases with speed but remains until I stop. It sounds/feels like little thuds, almost like driving on sleepers but not as intense?

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe wheel bearing.

If it speeds up and slows down it can't be many things

Wheel bearing

something stuck in the tyre

other fault with tyre,

caliper begining to seize

back plate catching the disc

Do you get any wheel imbalance, shaking of the steering ?

Check to see if one side feels hotter to the other after you have been driving or just

jack the front up and spin both sides to see how they feel to each other

The brakes sticking should really be fixed as this can cause judder and wont help

if your trying to check to see what the bearings like.

To check the bearing you'll need to make sure the pads are free from the disc first then

rotate the wheel and feel for lumpiness and listen for any noise, then hold the wheel at

9 and 3 and try to shake it back and forth gently, then the same at 12 and 6

I think the caliper is sticking slightly still but this feels different. It's a one of those things where you can't really explain in words you just "feel" it. I've had calipers that have been seized before and this feels like a different motion. Its not a judder per say it's like a noise, with a bit of vibration, Intermittent, "dum, dum, dum, dum" seems to increase/decrease with speed........................Told you it was hard to explain in words.

It's due for MOT next month anyway so i'll need to get it sorted by then. May take it and let the garage tell me what it is lol.

If it is a bearing, how much you looking for for the front hubs?

After taking everything everyone has said into account I'm starting to think it may be the calipers. Checked the n/s front wheel and it was really hot. Might be worth replacing these first.

Anyone got any jspec n/a calipers in good working order going cheap?

Peter

Classic seized caliper symptoms. how handy with the spanners are you? You could possibly just refurb it yourself with new seal/dust boots. Also cleaning the pistons with some fine wet & dry.

Be wary of buying old cheap calipers as they will soon seize up just like the ones you have

now unless they have been refurbed.

If you have j spec 2 piston calipers then it could very well be that the caliper is sticking

on the sliding pins as well as it being the pistons seizing.

If your pistons are pitted then their scrap, if its only light surface corrosion

then you might get away with fine wet and dry.

You can buy pistons and seal kits from Chris Wilson

While your looking at the fronts it would pay you to check the rears as they will

be close to doing the same as well

I had the calipers all cleaned up when i had the new front discs and pads put on. Bear in mind my spanner may as well be made of chocolate for how much use i am with stuff like that. Any work that is needed will be undertaken by a garage.

Cheers for the advice Dunk. So does anyone have any cheap calipers that have been recently refurbed properly for sale lol. perhaps after a big brake upgrade?
