herbiemercman
hi everyone, i must appologise for the most part i only access the club for technical info, all be it other members should benefit. i have a 1995 mk4 with 50k miles on clock, owned it from new. recently the speedo clock has started fluctuating, can be acurate up to 40 mph and then above this it sort of doubles the actual speed, it then can drop to zero. does anyone know if this could be the speed sensor, and where it is located. ? it could be a loose connection, but need to know where the wire connections are located. ? many thanks. herbiemercman. herbiemercman
just got my diagnosis and apparantly it is the speedometer clock itself, the pulse receiver, and they say it would be difficult to repair and a replacement would be the best way forward. ? the clock from toyota comes in 4 parts or so and there are two electronic plate parts included, they are circa £45 inc. vat each. you need to know which parts you need. ? does anyone know where there is a used clock for sale. ? many thanks. herbiemercman. SteveR
Try Keron, he's a breaker. Just replace the whole unit containing the clocks.

stevie_b
It could also be the speed converter (an aftermarket little black box that converts kph to mph). That sits upstream of the speedo cluster, so depending on who tested it for you and how they did it, that could be a possible cause.

herbiemercman
hi steve and everyone, would like keron's info for future reference but i am well pleased to inform you that i tried a suggestion from another thread on this forum to dissconnect my battery for 60 seconds, this has worked, i am so suprised and i was ready to spend cash, what a great club this is. i must point this out to the auto electr who first diagnosed the clock being the problem in his opinion. i know from experience with my merc that rebooting can resolve electronic problems, this is also why i will not let anyone jump start me with a booster pack. my brother has a mk4 tt and when it was being resprayed the garage kept jump starting it to move it arround as it needed a new battery, this eventually blew the ecu and the car had to go to chris wilson to be sorted. herbiemercman.
