Chris Wilson
Had a conversation with a mate at work about this issue (he knows quite a lot about engines etc) and he said there is a possibility that the heater control valve might not be opening correctly which might explain why there is no heat either side of the matrix. Does this sound like a possibility? Yes, I have seen this when water flow valves are not opening. I am pretty sure the MKIV heater uses a water flow valve, from memory. Slicknick
Can you hear the motor working behind the dash when you turn the knob? I have heard of these breaking or the motor arm becoming detached.

I have heard of these breaking or the motor arm becoming detached. That was one of the first things I checked. Appears to be attached ok and moving when you adjust from cold to warm temp. slugger1
Sorted my heater today . Turned out it was the matrix in the end. Put the hose through it and cleared out a load of gunk. I now have heat woohoo!
