thudding from rear and gear stick bounces as same time? any ideas ?

i have developed a problem when i pull off gently only sometimes i get a thudding from the rear of the car underneath and the gear knob bounces up and down quite a bit, more also when im in traffic going up hill holding biting point or full lock slowly turning, i have a 1993 mk4 non turbo supra, has anybody had this problem and can point me in the right direction?
