Coming along well now :)

Good read for when i start to strip my engine down, wont be going into as much as you have, just tt headgasket and new belts for me then back together

That's all I was going to do and when you say it, it sounds so simple! Reality in my case was that whilst it's apart I thought now is a good a time as any to do the stem seals, doing the stem seals required removing the valves and seen as they're removed I may as well clean the whole lot up and re grind them into the head. The plus side of cleaning it all up is there is less chance of built up carbon causing DET. It's one of those jobs which expands, expands and then expands some more. You will have to be very self disciplined to keep it a simple build :D

I have also checked both the block and head for flatness. OEM tolerances I believe are 0.07mm for the block and 0.1mm for the head. I've measured both surfaces to be flat within 0.04mm. There may be less variation than the 0.04mm but I haven't got anything to measure lower than that at the moment. Either way, it's well in spec and ready to reassemble :)

No mate, I'm just a young lad without a hobby :D

I tend to just cross reference against things I find online and the Toyota work shop manuals.

Nice work mate, massive respect to you for doing this yourself, without actually being a mechanic, this will be something I eventually want to do myself as well, i.e. take engine out and learn how to totally rebuild it :D

Cheers! :)

It's really quite interesting doing it to be honest. Find it super relaxing just chilling in the garage/shed with some music on and tinkering away. I've got no deadline so can do it at my own pace inbetween daily life and work.

I thought that too tbh, as long as you don't rush it, or aren't in any rush in the first place its probably quite good fun :)

Working now....looking good

Cheers mate, clutch is my main concern at the moment. Really not sure what to go for, I'm thinking one of the Spec clutches Whfibitz sell as I've read a few bad things about the Competition Clutch items. More reading to do yet!

6 paddle will take your power but not good for street use mate as had one in car mate if you got money hyper single if not it a hard one you want the one with a best of both worlds mate :)

As I only have the W58 transmission I don't want to spend too much really. I'm looking at a maximum of £500 for the clutch but in an ideal world would like to find something cheaper. I can live with it not being particularly street friendly as the car doesn't do many miles and doesn't sit in traffic often, however, I don't want to buy a clutch that's going to kill the box quicker than necessary.

What clutch/transmission is yours mate?

Awesome work mate can't wait to see some more progress!

Cheers! It all started out the same as your wanted thread.. black NA manual :D (SZ-R is the one to go for, has some nice bits such as leather headlining, LSD etc. and the later SZ-R's even had the six speed box. Mine is a five speed though)

Stage 1 spec clutch from Whifbitz - Sorted - :D

The Spec clutch Stage 1 for the five speed is only rated to 275ft/lb torque :(

They do sell the other stages though to handle more torque. Shall have a look at them now. It needs to be a sprung hub from what I've read to give me a fighting chance of delaying the inevitable :D

Yeah just saw that! Mind you for your £500 budget you should be able to get the stage 3/4 which are rated at 360ft/lb :)

Speak to Biebs on here mate, whatever Clutch he's sourced for his 5 speed after an N/A-TT transplant, seems to be pretty darn good and I've been in his car and he gives it a hell of a lot of abuse, :p but he's only running stock boost around 0.8bar

oh and I would suggest NOT getting a paddle clutch, you'd blow the W58 to pieces.
