Fitz
Just went out to drive the car back from my mother-in-laws house with my son and the car doesn't want to start. Car was last run on Wednesday and didn't miss a beat however today doesn't want to start. I had a 2nd hand NA engine supplied and fitted by Keron a few months back and haven't had any problems with it until today. Battery is fine and all electrics are working fine (Battery was replaced in Dec 2011 for Halfords brand). The car just seems to tick over like it wants to start but doesn't. It was low on petrol, light came on about 10 miles before I parked up but never reached the last petrol 'block' on the gauge. I went round the corner with 2 Jerry Cans (5L each) and put more petrol in but still no joy. Any ideas? Just seems like its one problem after another. Fitz
Also, after trying to start it and it just cranks over I can smell fuel so I know the pump is working (can also hear it priming)
listy
Starter motor on its way out? HT leads? Spark plugs?
Guest ugp
If it's cranking at the usual speed, is it sparking? You said it smells of fuel, any pops or bangs when it spins over? I'm assuming it's not some cruddy immobiliser causing you issues?
Nic
Also, after trying to start it and it just cranks over I can smell fuel so I know the pump is working (can also hear it priming) You may just have flooded the engine, push accelerator pedal to the floor - hold it there don't pump it - and turn the engine over, if it is flooded it should fire up after 20 seconds or so. If that doesn't do the trick then pull the plugs and check for fuel and spark.
Fitz
I've had to leave the car at the in laws house but will try these suggestions out when I'm next there. My initial thought was spark plugs so that will be my first point of call. Is it easy to change the plugs on an NA?
Fitz
Just having a read about spark plugs and types to use from the guide on here by Ian C (thanks) Normally Aspirated NGK - Standard - BKR5ES-11 (2382) - gap is already 1.1mm at the "-11" signifies they should be set to this already. NGK - V-Power - BKR5EYA-11 (2526) - gap is already 1.1mm at the "-11" signifies they should be set to this already. NGK - G-Power Platinum - BKR5EGP (7090) - gap to 1.1mm NGK -Laser Platinum - BKR5EP-11 (3440) - gap is already 1.1mm at the "-11" signifies they should be set to this already. NGK -OE Laser Iridium - IFR5T11 (4996) - gap is already 1.1mm at the "-11" signifies they should be set to this already. NGK - Iridium IX - BKR5EIX-11 (5464) - gap is already 1.1mm at the "-11" signifies they should be set to this already. Denso Platinum - PK16R11 - gap to 1.1 (but always check first) Has anything changed since it was last updated? Or is the V-Power highlighted one still considered best for an NA on 99 RON. I've heard the plugs are a PITA to change on an NA as you need to take the intake off, is that so?
Abz
Yes indeed, a right pita!! I had a look up as I thought it would be nice & easy to do but it looks like a couple hours worth of work. On my phone so can't link you the thread.
listy
You can do 4 out of the six easy. The one at the back is doable but a pita. The second from the back of the engine requires the intake to be removed afaik.

How hard is it to remove the intake...considering I have no experience with tools or basic mechanics whatsoever. Someone else I spoke to said it may be a blocked injectors? Sound like a realistic problem?
