RB-GTE
So my Supra is getting painted now with my bodyman. We removed the door pannels as I had to remove the door handles and mirrors. Since the whole door is taken apart already I'd prefer to do everything on one shot. ! So once I have the new speakers what steps do I have to take to take to replace the current one? I just glanced at it and I believe there were 3 or 4 very small screws holding it in place. When I pop it out is it as simple as just unpluggin the old one and pluging the new one in? Never done it before so looking for some pointers. Also for the speaker cover on the door pannel, I believe that when I purchase some 4" speakers they would include new covers? so the new cover would just go on the door pannel? cheers
Guest gunness1991
most new speakers have 4 screws, i can't confirm the following but from what i remember the original front door speakers have 3 screws, almost like a rounded triangle design. fitting an aftermarket 4'' over the factory hole would result in empty space around the speaker, and holes not lining up. what I did, after i bought mine and saw what the previous owner had done, was try to line up the speaker against the gray baffle as best as i could and screw it on (drill pilot holes, you could maybe use ONE of the existing holes) and then I used some dynamat to seal off any empty space between the new speaker and the baffle, so all air moves through the port on the side of the speaker. night and day difference in sound quality by sealing the extra space. and for the cover, i'd leave it the way it is. the cover is a 6.5'' speaker cover, with half of it actually solid, with a 4'' speaker behind. hope this helps
heckler
you can buy adaptor which sit in place of the old plastic box (held on with 3 screws) IIRC about £20-25 pair from SRD (trader) on the forum. This means you can fit larger speakers. As for the factory grills - I'd leave them on
RB-GTE
whoops I just realized the front speakers are not 4", I should be getting some 6" speakers for the doors. I think the rear seat ones are 4". Ok but aside fitment, is it as simple as unplugging the factory ones and plugging in the new speakers I buy? heckler
Rears are 6" too. Yup, just connect to cables
edd_t
id recommend getting the front door adaptors. I fitted mine a few weeks ago with 17cm (6.5"?) speakers. i pulled the wiring out of the horrible heavy speaker box thing in the door and connected it to the new brackets. then fitted 17cm speakers in the back too, this meant drilling through the metal brackets but it was quite easy. in the back though I did have to cut and re-crimp the cables though. listy
There is a speaker bracket template somewhere on here so you could make your own. Thats what I did. Took about 15 mins to make the brackets. And no altering anything needed. Just bolt the new brackets in place of the old stock speaker housing. Depending on what speakers you get, will depend on whether you can keep the stock speaker cover in the front. Some speakers wont sit in enough to keep them (like mine) but my speakers came with their own mesh to put over the top anyway. Wires should be unplug, plug in. The rear speakers, I found with some persuasion, 16cm speakers screw straight into the metal mount with 3 of the screws, but hold more than well enough.
