HID Bulb advice urgently needed

Big Mark

Recommended Posts

Myself and westy882 were part of the HID Group Buy and both have the same issue so am hoping someone on here can shed some light on the situation as the ebay seller has given him seven days to return the items for an exchange if needed.

The problems are;

a) the HID bulb doesn't seem to fit. I forced one in but wasn't happy doing it and couldn't get passenger side one in as I needed to remove the battery for more leverage.

b) the only way to get the HID to light up is to turn the connection from the loom to the ballast around (swapping polarity) but then the connection isn't locked together as the clips are on opposite sides then.

Can someone please look at the pics below and let me know do we have the wrong kits? We both ordered the same as everyone else with a j-spec car 9005/HB3 but looking at my old bulb and the tabs it is a 9006J. So are these compatible or do we need to exchange our kits and if so for which ones?

I bet I know what the problem is.

Im gonna stab a guess and say that it rocks when you try and fiddle it in?

Check the diameter on the bulb at the base to the old bulb. Some are too wide and won't fit through the hole though the stud pattern is the same.

EDIT: just checked the photos and it does look like the rubber seal is sat on a larger diameter. Worth checking

The centre spigot if you will, the part with the O ring seal needs to be filed down a bit to make it fit. Common problem with 9006 bulbs, J spec cars run 9006J bulbs which are slightly different.

If you look at it, theres a chamfered section above the O ring, file that back a bit and it fits fine. Ive done that before and did exactly the same thing on the set of HIDs I got from the same group buy.

On the back of the bulb holder on the headlamp there are three crosshead screws. I loosened them off a bit to get the bulb turned then tightened them up again once the bulb was in position.

I'm liking this idea more than trying to file back the HID bulb. Especially as the bulb shouldn't be touched and one slip and it could be ruined.

I've got the exact same issue as big mark.

We both bought a 9005 HB3 kit and later found out that our dipped bulbs from factory are 9006 HB4...thinking my car was somehow different I started reading old threads on here and the answer has become as clear as mud!

Would someone please explain why 9005 HIDS are the correct ones for a facelift j spec despite being 9006 from factory and what modifications are required to be made to the bulbs for them to fit/turn on!?

The eBay seller has offered to exchange the units to the 9006, but don't know which kit I actually need now!?

The polarity on mine was incorrect as well, I thought it was just my car  Hence I never mentioned it. If you look at the stock connector for the light (the brown plug in my installation guide photos), you'll see a small "+" by one of the pinholes. On both of mine that was actually ground, and the OTHER pin was +12v. I thought it was just some legacy madness from a previous owner or something, and just turned the connectr round and jammed it in, resolving to swap the pins one day so it clicks shut properly.

I never thought it'd be the same on other cars :) See if your "+" sign is on the wrong pin. It doesn't matter with a normal bulb of course, but does when you start putting actual electronics in the loop. Ironically, Alex's will be wired up correctly as that's part of the wiring I sorted for him lol

So let me get this straight. If my j spec facelift has 9006j bulbs as standard then the 9005 HB3 is the correct replacement, I need to modify the three tags and file off the ridge in the connector.

The reversed polarity of the wiring supplied is a seperate issue.

This is what I need to know too. A simple yes or no so that I know what to do next. I'm running out of time ot do an exchange with the ebay seller if I need to.

With the HID kit i purchased (Darret's original group buy) I managed to get 1 bulb to fit, its in (no modification) but im not positive that there is a 100% seal, i still get the light misting up in cold weather. The other side, i just trimmed the tabs to the exact dimensions of the stock bulb, and it fit exactly without any problems, and seals 100% too. All you have to do is cut the tabs slightly...best to do it with the headlight out to make it easier. Dremel or a stanley knife will do the job, use stock bulb as a template, HTH

Mark - I received 9006's by mistake. I'm sending the bulbs back as they don't fit my facelift.

As for the polarity, I think the looms are wrong in some cases...because with filament bulbs it doesn't matter which is which.

If you want perfect then, like me you could fit these to your loom and remove the stock ones.

Thanks SupraP-Z , lloks like I don't need to return my HIDs then, just modify them.

No worries mate, about the polarity...some of these ebay kits just come like that. Ive only ever had one where ive had to swap the connector round the other way for it to actually work. Bit stupid as wont give that satisfying click sound, not a problem, just use a cable tie to hold it in place if in doubt :) I have a jspec btw, so my HB3/9005 bulbs didnt fit properly without trimming the tabs, managed to get one in without trimming, but as mentioned before it causes misting problems...got to sort that out!

Could you post up pictures of the HID kit you received? I was on the list for this as well
