White smoke on idle - Update 29-09-12 - SORTED

Right, I have done a search, and come to the conclusion that this is caused by either turbo oil seals, or valve stem seals.

This is on a 1993 NA-TT 5 speed.

When starting the car (cold or hot) I'm getting white smoke from the exhaust. This doesnt appear to be present when driving, only at idle.

There is also oil residue in the end of the exhaust, I know this happens anyway, but there appears to be more than normal.

I cant see anything leaking from under the car or in the engine bay. (Every time I get home, I park on a large flattened box to try and catch any leaks.)

I did see some rainbow effects on the ground though, this was before i used the box, but since I have been using the box, nothing has appeared.

So, I'm *guessing* that somehow oil is getting into the exhaust from the turbo area?

Also, the first turbo hesitates sometimes, as if it doesnt want to spool.

Video showing the smoke and oil residue from the exhaust. Started from warm-ish, a few blips of the throttle, this is the result at idle.

It looks like burnt oil to me. It could be normal exhaust residue, theres just much more than usual.

It only started smoking recently and its been BPU double decat since I had it.

This coupled with the hesitation on the first turbo has me a little worried that tubby 1 may be on its way out/oil seals gone.

I have let it run up to normal temperature and it is still smokey, but it comes and goes. I havnt noticed it today.

Thinking about it, I have only noticed it since it has been wet recently. Could it be something as simple as rain getting in the exhaust?

The coolant stays level and isnt being thrown into the expansion tank, so HG is safe :)

VSV's according to Dnk can be ruled out.

Still concerned about the tubby oil seals due to the hesitation on tubby 1.

Any ideas on that one? A mate suggested cleaning the MAF sensor. Would that help?

On colder damp days you will get moisture being heated up inside the exhaust and

it looks like this.

Steam from a kettle is the best description :)

Once my car is up to temp the condensation inside the exhaust is gone and it doesn't

do it again till the car sits overnight in the cold, it doesn't keep doing it once warm.

It doesn't do this though until we get colder weather, i am off to my car shortly so will

take some photos when i start it up

It does look like it could be condensation, what does it smell like? Does it smoke if you rev it a lot?

+1 on that. Mine is gone after about 5-10 minutes.

This is my point Dnk. Mine never smoked until recently.

And Noz, this is my worry. The hesitation on 1st turbo coupled with the white smoke spells bad news to me :(

Just wishing someone could give me a better idea of whats wrong. I'll try and get a video of the hesitation later today.

Half way through doing a full service now, and the oil was changed when i did the oil pump a few months ago.

Brake and power steering being done hopefully this weekend.

O2 sensor not sure about, might just replace it anyway. Fuel pump and filter being replaced soon too.

Dont have an AFR guage. How else can I tell if its rich or not? Saying that, a little rich is better than a little lean ;)

100% Correct.

I see a thread like this pop up evey year when it gets colder from summer.

It should be put on a sticky

You can’t really... well you can’t accurately.

There are things like soot in the exhaust or sooty plugs, however even then looking at the plugs it’s not that accurate as it will only tell you how rich it is when you are idling not when you are using the car (unless you were to whip out a plug when going along - Not advisable)

Running too rich is just as bad as running too lean.

If you run too rich for extended periods you will get something called bore wash and you will wear you piston rings very quickly (Petrol is a thinner and therefore too much will remove the thin layer that oil your piston rings lay down on the cylinder walls).

Get an AFR gauge and Sensor.

Right. Got the car on the ramp and the good news ( I think) is I can't see any oil leaking from the turbos. So I think tubby oil seals can be ruled out?

I'll check all the vac hoses now.

How do I check to see if the wastegate is sticking?

No boost controller.
