Windscreen wiper question

What mechanism controls the position the wipers rest at? When on intermittent, sometimes they will do a sweep, get to the bottom of their stroke then rise up again and stop, about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom, sometimes they dont stop at all and carry on until they feel like stopping lol. Same result when you use the screen wash.

Any ideas as its driving me nuts!

it sounds like the wiper motor, as this has tracks on it to feed power to the motor when they are turned off in a position when the wipers are not at there rest position, when the get to there final park position it then shorts both side of the motor together to act as a brake and stop the motor quick if this does not happen the motor continues on and picks up power again and goes again untill it gets to the park position.

it could be a track on the motor or the switch on the coloum or a relay/intermitant relay, sorry i cant be of any more help than that as i have just got in and i am starving.

study the workshop wiring manual it will show the wire colours etc for you to check.

i will check the manual when i get up and post what to check if needed.

good luck regards chris

Yes please Chris, that would be great. Ill check the relay as well.

sorry its a bit late in the reply, if you look at the link below and view the electrical diagrams page 126 in a pdf viewer you will see that the blue/red wire and the blue/white wire are joined together when the wipers are turned off, so to check its not the motor you could lift the wipers off the screen, turn on wipers then turn off again, and from what you are saying they should continue, if they keep going then remove cowl to get to the wiper swich wiring then get a short lenth of wire and join the blue/red and blue/white wires together ONLY WHEN THE WIPER SWITCH IS OFF, if the wipers stop then the motor track and switch is ok, it then could be the switch or if it has one an intermitant relay, i have had a quick look and can not find an intermitant relay, it might be in with the wiper switch.

if you need any more help then let me know. (I work nights so may take time to reply)

regards chris
