BenRichardsFife
hey guys, my car makes a horrible whirring noise when started from cold. its coming from the apexi air filter that my car has installed on it. i took a video which shows the noise a bit more clearer (the video is from a dead cold start) http://youtu.be/ofAV66RTf8E it dies down after the car heats up and practically disappears, but obviously it would be a good idea to sort it because it will most probably be affecting the intake of air to the engine right, im guessing the air filter obviously needs replaced, or can the filter be cleaned etc? or is it a definite replacement job. any help its appreciated, Ben
ripped_fear
What you should really do is buy my stock air box and ducting Shameless plug there. All joking aside mate if you want to keep anon genuine filter then give it a clean. You can buy special cleaner for cone filters, simply spray it on, wash it off, leave to dry then re fit it. If that doesn't work then I would buy a new one cant be that expensive i wouldnt have though. May even be cost affective to just go for a new one anyway. supra joe
Hats normal for an aftermarket cone filter, mine does the same. Gonna change back to stock airbox, when I find a cheap enough one.

straightsix
1. The sound is normal for a cone filter. 2. If you're not going to change it, at least take it off and tap the muck out of it. It looks pretty choked. 3. What's the thing that looks like a brass union on the alloy intake pipe?? Cap it off if it's not being used. 4. Your IAT sensor isn't much use cable tied to the wiring loom like that. It ought to be fitted into the intake pipe.

straightsix
Difficult to tell if it's capped in the vid Yes - get hold of the rubber grommet that it would sit in it the stock pipe (I might have a spare but someone should have one knocking around), drill a hole of suitable size, locate the grommet then fit the sensor. Simple If you have access to an airline, blow all the crud out of your filter too!
