Noz
Having some squeeks and noise come from lowest pulley on the aux belt on front of engine. Could this just be the bearings need replacing? Its pretty bad sometimes wont even start because of it.
Oddball87
Do you mean the crank pulley mate? Its the largest one on the engine. If so you will most prob need to replace the crank pulley because it will end up separating and can cause a lot of damage.
DodgyRog
Sounds like the Crank Pulley bud, if it is, then don't mess around and get a new one, if it flies off it can wreck everything and you being NA-T it is going to be really expensive compared to just replacing the Pulley There is a Tippex test, but if it is wobbly then it's pretty much guaranteed to be dead http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?174726-O-Crap-Looks-light-my-Crank-pulley-is-going
Dnk
There are no bearings in the crank pulley and use a genuine pulley not a cheap aluminium one Their around £300 from Toyota Edited September 9, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)
ashbuster
this is exactly whats wrong with my car havent moved my car or started it since and im waiting for mine to come in the post. now i have a dead battery too that i have to replace. never have a problem starting it or any squeeks but since i noticed the wobble it hasnt been started
Dnk
The battery could just be flat, before you buy a new one jump start your car and take it for a 10 mile drive and when you get home you could find its re charged and fine. I suffer this with not using my car very much and its always been fine once its been driven.
ashbuster
i have put it on charge overnight will see what happens. i would have had it done now but still waiting for the pulley and i only have 1 and half weeks left to get it all finished. Swampy442
You don't need coilovers, you do NEED a crank pulley
listy
Always happens when you least expect it dude I had my crank seal, oil pump, crank pulley, and the white van incident (hense respray) all happen within 10 weeks £3k gone right there! (including a bit of labour cost)
Noz
you didnt pay for white van costs though did you bud? just a new pulley and belt change is all thats needed with crank pulley replacement?
listy
Might not even need the belt mate. But may as well change it while its off. Yeah had to pay for the white van damage. No CCTV and couldnt track the van down. I dont park outside that shop anymore lol
Swampy442
Just to make sure it's the crank pulley do the tippex test
Noz
Ah bad times. I only had a new aux belt in may! And not done many miles. PITA! Though it's pretty cheap anyway. Bloody car... she better hit 400 when I get it tuned again or I'm gonna be miffed! Just to make sure it's the crank pulley do the tippex test Is this to see if the bearing moves inside the pulley then?
listy
No bearing in the crank pulley mate. The pulley is in two parts, an outer and inner, which are bonded together. iirc the idea is to put a bit of tipex across the join where it is bonded, and run the car. If the tipex cracks, then the pulley is dead.
Noz
ok good, dumb questions thanks for helping, ive never swapped parts like this so its new to me.
Noz
just used some perm marker as didnt have any tipex. it squeeked starting up. turned it off, lines have moved! Nooooooo! Can I not just weld them together?
listy
No mate. Its bonded because its a dampened pulley. If you weld it, it will take the dampening effect away. Yours is the 4th or 5th I have seen go on the forum since mine. Think I started a trend
Noz
That sucks mate. How easy is it to get off? Did you do it?
listy
Yeah did it myself mate. Hardest part is getting the bolt off. I used the breaker bar and starter motor trick to get mine off. Put the breaker bar with required size socket on the bolt, and have the other end of the bar on the floor on the PASSENGER side. Turn the key in the ignition so the starter motor turns. DO NOT LET THE CAR TURN OVER!!!!!!!!! May have to do this a couple of times, I did. Then just remove the bolt, remove the pulley (takes a bit of persuasion and wobbling to get it off) replace with new pulley, and replace bolt. The bolt needs to be torqued up, but cant off the top of my head remember what to! I'll try find my old thread and find out.
Swampy442
Ive said it time and again, these pulleys have a service life, when you buy a new car dont blast 800 quid on coilovers and another grand on wheels, spend 800 quid on a crank pulley, cambelt change and new coil packs. ashbuster
new coolant too? beings tho the rad will be taken out? thats 40 quid right there too
