Rear wheel bearing replacement

Cheers guys. Getting the brake disc off was no problem, I learnt about the little cog the hard way last time I changed the disc!

I've now disconnected the lower arm so I can get better access to split that ball joint once its all off the car. The only thing stopping it all coming off is the upper wishbone ball joint, but I'm popping round a mates later to get the splitter jaws widened a little so it fits properly, then it should work fine. Its still on the drive shaft too but I'm hoping it will just slide off!

Fingers crossed!

Should do, but I just removed it first though just to get it out the way and give me more room to get the splitter tool on.

Just got round to put everything back together today and when it came to the upper suspension arm, gave it a little tap to re-engage to ball joint taper but when trying to tighten it, managed a few turns before the joint popped and started turning. Gave it another little tap but same thing happened. No matter how much I 'tap' it, it seems to pop and the bolt just spins!

Any ideas how to stop this happening? I guess the ball joint is supposed to do this to an extent but how do you put it all back together!?

I used a strongbar wedged into the cutouts on the arm. Ask someone to put pressure on it whilst you tighten the nut.

Well, I was beaten tonight (took ages doing the handbrake cable as the mountings were a bit shot) but everything is on bar the upper suspension arm ball joint and coil over then everything needs to be torqued up, job done! Mate is bringing a clamp round to help with the ball joint, couldn't seem to get enough weight on it but only tried for a couple of mins after it was dark.

Thanks again for the help guys!

You might have got grease all over the balljoint taper bit. I carefully wiped mine off with a rag sprayed with brake cleaner. Also the bit where the taper sits in the hub carrier. This stopped it slipping because the threads on the balljoint were covered in crud, the nut wouldn't tighten fully.

So top tips -

Clean and grease the threads on the nut and taper.

Try not to get grease on the actual balljoint taper and where it sits on the hub carrier.

This thing is doing my head in now! Somehow the nut for one of the other ball joints has stripped it's thread! Only found out today when I went to torque everything up. God knows how or when I managed that! So near, yet so far! It's beginning to feel like a comedy show, could be called Monkey with a Wrench :D

I've also been told the nuts have a nylon coating inside for a better fit and that they aren't re-usable...can anyone confirm this?

Now need to get a replacement! *Headache*

They are just nylon locknuts, nothing special apart from probably having a fine thread pitch. Mine still seemed fine but if you have doubts you should easily be able to get new ones from any fastner supplier.

As long as the thread on the balljoint is fine. That's the main thing.
