LR Discovery- Turbo problems.

Recommended Posts

My dad posted this on Facebook, but I don't know enough to help much.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be? I asked and he said there was no bang, so hoping the turbo isn't too bad.

"Horrible deep resonance at 3000rpm. Always had resonance at 300rpm, 2300rpm. Eliminated all the simple cheap easy possible causes.

Now there is a hot oil smell and an oil leak from below the turbo bearing."

Further to this, it turns out the oil return feed is leaking.

Its a Garrett .gt20 turbo on a 2000 plate disco.

Am I correct in saying for a replacement, any Garrett .gt20 turbo is fine? It wouldn't have to come from .LR as they charge an arm and a leg.

2000 will be a td5 engine you can pickup a new turbo from a motor factor at a good price. normally they do smoke and loose power when the turbo fails if you are just getting a noise then look for a boost leak check all pipes.

It's not a boost leak that's been ruled out with a smoke test.

Never thought to ask if he has blue smoke. What a muppet lol.

He's in Finland so unfortunately can't look myself. I'll keep trying to get more info.
