DodgyRog
Just after some general help and advice I have just received from Andrew K the Blitz 4 inch Intercooler and original Blitz hardpipes that I bought So as the title suggests, I am looking to do 2 things 1. Clean the Intercooler fins, theres a few flys and things in there and general road grime, also a couple of fins a very slight bent (proberbly stone hits) can i gently straighten them So what's the best way to do this without risking any damage, I was thinking of Jet washing 2. As you can see in the pic below all the parts have the dull worn look and I was thinking of polishing them up So again what's the best way to go at it, is it a case of just manually polishing with metal polish and putting the hours in or does it have to be done proffessionally Also once it is done, is there a secret to keeping it looking reasonably good or does it just require constant polishing, I am not looking at keeping it mirror polished, just clean Thanks in advance, just something else I have never really needed to worry about on the N/A Edited August 24, 2012 by DodgyRog (see edit history)
TubbyTwo
I would be tempted to go the whole way, strong degreaser sprayed through the fins and pressure washed out (not too close) then clean the insides of the IC as well. Petrol or Parafin is good for this. Might as well get it as clean as possible before fitting. If you want a strong water based degreaser, the look for Bilt Hamber Surfex HD, fantastic stuff. For polishing and protecting, the only thing you need: http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Britemax_Metal_Twins_1.html HTH. Thanks for that I have some Gunk engine cleaner in the shed I think, so I will try that, follwed by a gentle Jet wash then That polish stuff looks perfect, but me being me and the impatient git I am, I have just spent the last hour doing one pipe with Meguiars Metal Polish It's actually come up pretty good, even if it is a bit labour intensive and I have very black hands now lol Spot the difference Edited August 24, 2012 by DodgyRog (see edit history)
TubbyTwo
Looks 100 times better. Get some metal sealant on there and it will be good to go for ages. Nice bit of kit there, as usual I was too slow and missed it!
Dim Sum
Time and elbow grease is what you need I hope you get your supra back soon, TT makes a whole world of differences from a N/A soon after you be wanting more power:eyebrows:

Nice bit of kit there, as usual I was too slow and missed it! Any particular sealant you would suggest, something I will definately need to buy with a vented bonnet It was a good deal, 4 inch intercooler and full hard pipes and couplings for £350 and a well know and trusted brand to boot It took some persauding to get Jen to open the money chest again with all the BPU bits I have spent out on, but I could just not pass it up

DodgyRog
Well thats an afternoon spent well. They have been done to a reasonable standard, but I will go over them again hopefully as they could be better to be honest but I am done for today at least Quite a difference for 3/4 of a tub of Meguiars Metal Polysh and loads of Elbow grease I will do the rest of the Intercooler, the Tridon clips and Couplings tomorrow Is there anything in particular that will be best to clean the Silicone couplings with Edited August 24, 2012 by DodgyRog (see edit history)

Littler
Clean them up with a non acidic cleaner, I've used autosmart G101 on the whole of my engine bay and it works great on silicone couplings, then use aerospace 303 protectant to add a very nice finish to them

Littler
I'm not sure as not everywhere stocks it, autosmart does have reps in every area so the local rep may be available tomorrow. But I get it off eBay if you get this and then dilute it enough to do the job, say 8 parts water and 1 part G101 it will work brilliantly http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Autosmart-G101-500ml-500-ml-Multi-Purpose-Cleaner-Degreaser-FREE-P-P-/330772275710?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item4d039061fe The aerospace 303 protectant isn't something I've found in the shops but it's readily available online: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/interior/303-aerospace-protectant/prod_366.html
DodgyRog
Okay Adam thanks for that, I need to pop into town tomorrow, so I will see what I can find, but if nothing else I will get some ordered up
SupraDan24
You should buy some of the little rotary polishing cones off ebay Rog, a hard one for the first cut, then the soft mitt for the finish. They fit an electric drill and they'd have made short work of those pipes. You can get them for a couple of quid as well, well worth it Edited August 24, 2012 by SupraDan24 (see edit history)

DodgyRog
Spent the morning doing a bit more polishing using the Britemax that TubbyTwo suggested. They are starting to get there now, but really takes a long time The side parts of the intercooler don't seem to want to polish up, so not sure what to do about that, may have to get a bit for the dremel and give it a bit of machining Wanted to try uploading with TapTalk as well;), but the pic is a bit fuzzy thanks to my old crappy 3GS

I might try some Autosol on the sides of the Intercooler as it is more abrasive Do you want to send me your PayPal bud and I will sort out the payment Also do you know if it can be fitted into the stock position, as I don't really want to cut up my Hardpipes now:d
