Nicko
1994 JAZ80 non turbo - Jap import hey fellas, Was hoping to get a little insight into a new problem I have with with my supra. Something has broken in the head of the engine, It started off with a little tap that I didn't think much of and now a couple of days ago it suddenly developed into a really loud clapping sound. I think one of the exhaust valves has broken as the sound is coming from that area. I've had the rocker covers off and inspected the cams, they seem ok no damage to the lobes. Also what I can see of the cam followers underneath all seems in order. The engine runs and starts fine, its on all 6 cylinders and apart from the clapping sound it runs smooth no vibrations, so I'm not suspecting failure of heavier bottom end components.(Not yet) The only work done on the car recently was new spark plugs, which ran great until it went bust. Next thing to do is strip the head off and look at the valves and piston faces. I thought I'd upload the video I took today to get some insight as I'm sure you fellas have come across this before.! Any help or suggestions are appreciated guys. -Nicko [video=youtube;p2hfx-2Bo1U]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2hfx-2Bo1U&feature=youtu.be

Nicko
The cone was just put on to test the engine, it normally goes right down into the front, and the wires are all over the shop as i've just quickly put everything together. The issue is the knocking!
Kirk
Have you tried to run it with the cam covers off? What may not be blatantly obvious when the engine isn't running may become very clear whilst it is.

Kirk
I wasn't implying the covers being off were going to make the noise go away, I was thinking if its top end like you say then you'd be able to isolate it. You're sure its top end and internal for definite?
Nicko
Part of me thinks the tapping is a bit too fast for it to be a valve, what external parts could tap like this?
-Welsh-Stealth-
Ouch! Tried compression testing each cylinder? If it is a fubar valve at least it'll show you where to start looking. If not possibly bottom end bearings? Has it been run dry? And on the upside, NA engines don't cost alot
Nicko
Yep, bottom end bearing it is. Listen, then listen to mine at the top. Identical.
keron
defo sounds like bottom end knock... had a couple in like this mate... u sure it was not ran low on oil?
Nicko
Yeah it ran on 5 litres for a short while without realizing. Considering fixing it myself, does anyone know if the engine has to be raised a little to get the oil pan out?
Kirk
Engine out job or subframe off. It would be easier to just get a replacement lump, probably cheaper as well. Edited August 20, 2012 by Kirk (see edit history)
