Would you drive an untuned Apexi Power FC? - Help me tune it!!

I've got a stock JDM car apart from UK spec turbos and UK spec cams. Everything else is stock JDM and no boost controller (cats in place).

 

I've installed the Apexi Power FC initialized it to the basemap and now I need to have a wideband bung welded into the downpipe.

 

Would you consider it safe to run the above configuration without having it tuned and without being able to see AFRs?

 

I would normally not do that with any basemap for a standalone, but since the Apexi is build for the Supra and the engine is virtually stock I'm thinking that the basemap could be safe enough to do that.

So I have wired in the wideband and done some logging.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing so any help is appreciated.

 

I have attached the log file and an Excel document that I made to be able to calculate the corrections needed.

 

What I'm mostly in doubt about is what target AFRs to go for.

 

I have compiled a set of target AFRs for rpm and load using the stock MAP sensor.

 

I copied the target ARFs from the stock map from the Power FC and replaced the 14 with 14.7.

 

What do you think? Are they way off?

Without knowing what the X and Y values are for both those charts, the numbers are meaningless :)

 

Also, the stock O2 sensor is narrowband, you can't feed that signal to a system expecting a wideband input, it'll cause chaos. Narrowband only sends between 0 to 1 volts, wideband uses 0 to 5 volts, it'd be a disaster.

I have a wideband as I just wrote.

 

The x is of course rpm

 

Y is kg/m2

 

24000 kg/m2 is around 2.35 bar absolute so it'll be a map that goes to 8000 rpm and 1.35 bar boost. It is the base map of the Apexi.

 

10000kg/m2 is around 1 bar so it'll be the transition between vacuum and positive boost.

 

And of course the cells in the target AFR table are equivalent to the log table.

 

What I'm primarily looking for is where I can safely lean it out to get better fuel milage. And to what target AFR in those areas.

You can go to 14.7 on everything under 0 Bar and including 0. When spooling you go a bit richer, maybe around 12.5. On full boost you'll want 11-12 depending on EGTs(and maybe knock). If the Apexi is a Stand alone you will have to tune ignition timing too to match everything.

 

p.s. regarding Revs i wouldn't go over 7200 on a stock engine and head.

Way too rich, that table can be leaned out considerably, having said that the fact that your asking for help to map your car, and you say you have no idea what your doing rings major alarm bells.

 

There is far more to mapping than just getting the fueling right, you need to be able to monitor knock before you even attempt any timing adjustment, and i would fit an EGT gauge,

Its not a case of adjust and forget unless you can guarantee you have hit all of the load points that you will encounter in all driving conditions, if your not totally sure of how to go about mapping, then take it to someone who does it for a living, or it could get very expensive.

First of all, I'm not going to attempt to tune the car on any major boost. It is going to a tuner.

 

I'm considering EGTs on each cylinder or at least one on cylinder 6.

 

The Apexi is a standalone and it monitors knock. There is an aplication called CoPilot that can autotune the fuel and the ignition if given a reasonable basemap and target AFRs. I was considering using that and just drive nicely without getting into any real boost.

 

I just wanted to lean it out a little off boost so I won't waste so much fuel. The milage is really poor at the moment.

 

I would also like to know more about how to tune. Like what are acceptabel AFRs and EGTs ect.

 

I'm also getting a new map sensor that'll go to 3 bar absolute. So I need to be able to do small changes to the map so it'll be ready to go to a tuner.
