Big Mark
On a spirited drive home from seeing friends this afternoon I lost power. The car is an auto RZ-S My SBD id Bost Controller was already installed when I got the car and hadn't got around to reading up on it so left it set the same as when I got the car but I think it was set too high as afterwards I noticed that I'd hit 1.32 bar. I've now got zero boost. Any ideas how much this is going to cost to fix?
bigbloodyturbo
Don't jump to the the worst just yet, if you've got zero boost you could have just blown a hose. If your turbo's where gone you'd see blue smoke or hear a hell of a racket either when driving or when trying to acellerate.
tooquicktostop
Pipe blown off,my money is on this
Big Mark
Thanks guys. I'm hoping the same too. Had a quick look when I gothome but too hot to have a good look. Not seen blue smoke or heard a rattle so I'm hoping it's a hose. Either way I definietly need to read up on the boost controller and dial it down tho. bigbloodyturbo
when you've found the blown hose and fixed it, turn the boost controller off and take it out and see what it boosts too, if it's lower than before then learn how to set the BC, if it's pretty much the same then the previous owner may not have installed a restrictor ring. Big Mark
Just had a look, couldn't see any blown off hoses but didn't check ones on intercooler. Definitely no rattles from turbos tho. Will pop it down to friendly garage in te morning. Is it ok to drive as it is or shouldn't I?
Chris Bailey
Just had a look, couldn't see any blown off hoses but didn't check ones on intercooler. Definitely no rattles from turbos tho. Hope this helps
Big Mark
I've definitely got no boost at all. Boost gauge won't go past 0. Car has an upgraded stereo system fitted so didn't hear a bang but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. How hard/easy is it to access intercooler? Swampy442
There no big bang, there is generally a pressure leak noise, but also if you're on boost and have a leak you will certainly hear it. in my Soarer experience a boost leak shows up as a boost pressure of 0bar
Josh
One of my pipes popped off when I removed it and didn't tighten the clamp enough on replacing it. It made a very loud 'whoosh' sound and when the boost gauge got past 0bar, it made a very loud whistle/whoosh. It also did it when revving while stood still. If it's a stock SMIC, it's not too hard. If it's popped off the IC, you will have to take the drivers side wheel and arch liner off to get to it.
Supra Gaz
Pipe pop for me, I hope its that for you dude.
thedirtycat
When one of my hoses was falling off I heard no pop or weird whistling sounds and my boost guage was still saying I was boosting fine but I lost loads of power and the acceleration was pathetic and felt like it was misfiring really badly. I think the turbos would be making a weird noise everytime you accelerated if they had gone.
Lee_e
My moneys on a pipe pop aswel .. hope you get it sorted dude
Big Mark
Just back from having the car quickly looked at but none the wiser. It looks like the actuator/wastegate (I don't know the difference) is stuck open as there is no boost being produced at all. If I squeeze the main pipe from the turbos to intercooler and blip the throttle I can't feel any pressure at all, surely there should be? LOGIE
personally id take it to the likes of Lee at SRD or another supra specialist someone who knows these cars. best of luck mate.
sideexitsupra
From the West Mids I would recommend either Chris Wilson near Telford or Ash at Garage786 in Leicester. Hope that helps
Guigsy
When my ic hose popped off the car would hardly rev at all and there was a tonne of black smoke because of the fueling
Big Mark
I moved to Rugby last Friday so I guess Leicester is closest. Wonder if they are open today?
Lude
have you checked all the stock vacuums? and the vacuums to the boost controller?
Big Mark
I've had a bit of a look but not entirely sure what I am looking for. Will look again in a bit as engine was hot earlier.
Lude
just have a look and see if nothing obvious has come undone, or there are no holes/splits in any of the small vacuum pipes
Big Mark
Had another look but can't see anything. Is the wastegate shaft supposed to be all the way in or out?
bigbloodyturbo
You won't generate boost pressure at a standstill, atleast not enough to be noticable when trying to squeeze a hose. You might however hear a whooshing sound coming from the blown off pipe. In my opinion even if the wastegate was stuck open you'd still build boost as the stock wastegate can't flow enough to control boost at bpu (and certainly not at 1.3bar). What noise do youg et when revving it with the bonnet open? you'll be able to get a little boost with revving at standstill, enough to hear a blown hose. Big Mark
I've tried revving it at a standstill and boost gauge only reaches 0. I can't hear anything that sounds like a blown hose.
