Caesard
I will be brief fellas. My alternator on my TT died on a road trip, and killed me battery. After the AA brought it home, I bought another alternator. While waiting for it to arrive, I started decatting my car. So I have removed the 1st and 2nd cats, and fitted in 3" decats, changed the engine oil fully with Castrol 5w 40 and changed the alternator with the one bought off here. Started the car, it starts perfectly, but when I engage any of the gears, nothing happens. No reverse, 1st gear, 2nd gear, nothing. Havent fitted in the HKS FCD yet (i will in a couple of hrs) and am still waiting for my colder plugs to arrive today. But the car should move at least. Have a boost gauge. Please what is wrong? mawby
It was towed with the rear wheels off the ground? It must have been...
Caesard
Nope. Fully loaded on the huge tow truck.
ubersonic
Checked the ATF level? wouldn't surprise me if its black though, as above towing an auto car without suspending the drive wheels is a recipe for disaster (had to explain this to an RAC guy once who got quite offended lol). *Edit* Well in that case /shrug
TubbyTwo
Any loose connections on the box?
safcdixon
youve been working underneath the car whilst decatting you could have knocked a switch plug or sensor, that would be my first thing to check
Caesard
I just checked the ATF level and it is nigh on empty. Must be the problem. I have Castrol ATF fluid, I don't know if that will work? Cos I don't think the local Halfrauds have the Toyota stock one. And I don't know what the last owner might have put in it.
dr_jekyll
halfords dextron iii works perfectly well
TubbyTwo
Am I right in thinking that to check the box level, it has to be warm with the engine running then select each gear a few times before checking the level? Is there a guide anywhere?
Caesard
Bought and put 2 litres of Castrol ATF III and the gearbox is now working, albeit sluggishly. And the dipstick still shows almost no oil in it. There is no leakage. WOnder how much oil it will take to reflect properly on the stick. Maybe 4L more? Digsy
Yes, the engine does have to be running to check the level, and it does hold a lot (most of it in the torque converter). There is a thread on here with all the fluid capacities on it somewhere. *Edit* Here it is: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?56684 Edited August 16, 2012 by Digsy (see edit history)

The-Plethora
I want to change my Autobox fluid but I read a post on supra forums suggesting dextron 3 but a couple of people say to only use the toyota stuff and people have had the box go within a month or two after, is the ATF from Toyota stupidly expensive?
