Jellybean
Hey The Thursday I started the car, she ran fine then started to drop below Idle RPM and cut out after about 30 secs; I taught nothing of it. Saturday after a 30 min drive on the motoreway 120 km/h; I pulled up at the lights after 10 mins of urban driving, at the lights the engine started to drop below Idle RPM cut out , so I restrated. no issues. Back on the motorway the car sitting at 120 km started to splutter for 2-3 secconds ; through out the day this happened about 2-3 times on the motorway sitting at 120km I pulled into the Motorway service station, left her running ; then after 30-40 seconds she dropped below Idle RPM and cut out MAP sensor? Check if any engine codes, Idle Control Valve need cleaning ? What do you guys reckon?
Geo
could be ICV bud, plugs or coil packs If your hand with a spanner there easy to change, clean, check over
Jellybean
Cool , will check them out the weekend How do you check the coilpacks are working? They are the weak point , 19 years old
Ian C
I don't think it's coil packs with that behaviour, sounds more like fuelling. Fuel filter dirty? O2 sensor failed and causing overfuelling? What's the fuel economy like now?

O2 sensor failed and causing overfuelling? What's the fuel economy like now? O2 Sensor/fuel Filter was only changed about 10-12 K ago Fuel Economy is fine I was thinking Map Sensor since the issues I had with a loose one after the track day; it was the first long run I gave the car since you helped me out Ian It was a bit strange on Thursday too, when I went to start the car she just clicked as though the battery was flat ; so I tried her again and she started! I am not a big fan of the Halfords battery I got , it is only about 8 weeks old. But first time that ever happened to me was when I actually had a flat battery. I was thinking maybe the ECU reset itself and was re-learning, not too sure ; if she did have a power cut the alarm I presume would have a hissy fit. I will bring her for a spin again and see how she fairs out. I presume an Error code will be thrown if it is an O2 Sensor? Jellybean
Trip on Saturday was around 110 miles ; I did about 6-8 WOT and it was 70 miles motorway at 130/140 KM/H / 30 Miles Urban about 30-50 KM/H ; I had about 30 liters of Petrol; I used about 20-25 Liters ; she is still above the reserve which I think is ok, I think it is about 25 mpg
Jellybean
Started the car today since Sunday , she clicked again on turn over then i turned the key back to off , retired and the started I checked the battery with a multimeter , car on she is aaround 13.2v; same with the car off Question is, should i see an error code too? Or anything indicating a faulty altenator ?
Guest ugp
The issue with the starting is the solenoid, quite common on these. Mine used to do it all the time, flick the key a few times and it always started, but that was just lucky. You need a solenoid rebuild kit, that'll sort you out. As for the cutting out, this isn't related to the starting issue, it could be many things as mentioned above.

Is the solenoud rebuild kit a Toyota part , diy job? Is it safe to drive or could it completely go anytime?
Guest ugp
Thanks, do have any pics or information as to where the splendid is? Is the solenoud rebuild kit a Toyota part , diy job? Is it safe to drive or could it completely go anytime? The solenoid is built into the starter. The rebuild kit is available from Toyota yes, have a search on here for part numbers etc, it's quite a common problem with them. You can do it as a DIY job in a day if you're not familiar with the car. I wouldn't say it was unsafe to drive, it's just a risk you take as to whether it will start. As I said, mine was like this for the whole time I had the engine in (2 years or so). In the winter months it took around 10 flicks of the key before it would catch. It never let me down, but maybe that's just luck.
