cooke
What are the two boxes for on the standard air pipe on an n/a, are they needed? I was thinking of putting on a metal pipe and it does not have these boxes. Picture of air pipe below https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/578729_401080916617009_789719472_n.jpg?dl=
SPG
Resonators? could be wrong
Ricardod
Water catch can and oil/dirt catch can or something that has passed the filter that has mass, just guessing?
Chris Wilson
They are resonators and work with the switched intake volume flap valve. They maximise engine torque and improve engine efficiency substantially. This is why most N/A's run like *%$~ when fitted with none factory air filter systems. Toyota will have done a huge amount of development to design a widely resonant intake system. Aftermarket air filter manufacturers will have gone to no trouble at all to %$@~ it all up. Of course, human nature being what it is, few people publicy admit that the engine now runs worse after spending a load of dosh on some ill conceived piece of brightly coloured junk.... LOGIE
I always knew the NA runs better on stock airbox but now I know why. Glad I kept it stock now
Chris Wilson
On most fairly modern to current N/A engines a lot of care has been taken to get a resonance throughout the induction and exhaust system to help cylinder filling, and thus economy, performance and emissions. It is very very hard to alter things on an otherwise stock engine and improve anything without substantially upsetting another facet of operation. You only get any gains after fairly radical mods to the engine like cam or (big) compression changes. Then the frequency of resonance has changed anyway. But people love to fiddle.... cooke
has anyone who has done the intake conversion (ie removed the two boxes) want to comment on the cars performance before and after it was done
straightsix
Yep - didn't notice any side effects.

cooke
I put the stright pipe with no resonators on it on and fitted an apexi air filter, the outcome is that the car goes better with it on and has more hp
downimpact
One of the local Na's had a hks when he bought the car and he switched it back to stock and thought it improved the response.
thomo8568
I've removed mine but still with the oem airbox and I thought it was better after but hard to tell really. Also thought it would have bin louder without them and didn't really notice any differance. Only way to really tell would be to do a dyno run befor and after, but don't think it would really be worth it.
