teddan
I have 3 rings. The top ring and second ring and the oil ring. I put the top ring into the first gap and the second it to the 3 gap and the oil ring in the 4. I could not see any marks on the top ring regarding which side should be up or down. For the second ring there are a edge so that one are correct and for the oil ring there are no problem. But why is it a 4 gaps on the piston and only 3 rings? Digsy
Do you mean your piston has four ring grooves but you only have three rings?
tkddav3
can you not just get the mad scientist to rip apart the block?

Chris Wilson
Photos. One groove will probably be for oil retention or something. Unless you have diesel truck pistons Ring fitment instructions and gapping should be in the piston kit. Follow EXACTLY, if they aren't gapped right they will either cause a seizure, or oil burning and poor performance. If you have never gapped rings before get someone else to do them. If they are used pistons bin them and buy new unless you are 110% sure of their history. Get them crack tested and checked for size, nonetheless.
