Guest Bozza91
Hi there, I'm new on here and desperately trying to figure out what's wrong with my supra. It has been off the road about 6 months now due to a stupid cow not watching where she was going, the damage was all rear end not bad, getting fixed soon but the issue is that it's been started fairly regularly to keep battery charged and everything working but all of a sudden it wouldn't start one day, I tried the flooded starting procedures in the manual and it fired up ( no worries there ) but the next time I tried to start it no hope, I left the battery off hoping to reset the ecu but made no difference. Then sprayed start ya bastard up the intake hoping it was stale fuel after a few goes it did start! But now the engine light and master warning light is on, drained all old fuel out by driving around and put fresh fuel in it but still the lights are on, and when you rev past 4,500rpm it cuts out hard and loses all its balls till you clutch it and it returns to idle and then is fine again unless you rev it past 4,500 again. Iv done an error code check and it comes up with 12 but im confused in whether my car has crank or camshaft sensors.. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Ian C
Your car will indeed have both crank and camshaft sensors
Guest Bozza91
Awesome, is it possible either of them have seized or gotten dirty due to sitting?
Ian C
Cam and crank sensors are passive, they measure magnetic field induction, so there is nothing to sieze and dirt doesn't affect them. What can happen though is the crank trigger disk detaches from the crank nose and doesn't move in time with the crank. Have a search for that and see if it helps. Generally, though, that problem means the car won't even start, not that it gets a low rev limit. Also, clear the codes and check again. If it comes back with a 12 again it's definitely the problem. Guest Bozza91
Thanks that helps heaps Yeah I was just thinking that, if that disk you speak of detached it'd be dead to the world wouldn't it? Could heat affect those sensors? Iv noticed that it doesnt even try to start when the weather is cold and miserable but if it's been reasonable it does have a go.. Once it is running tho it has power until it hits over 4,500 (it does change sometimes itd rev to 6 other times only 4,
Ian C
To be honest it sounds like a ropey electrical problem due to the variable presentation of the problem. You'd need to start doing all the diagnostics on the Crank and Cam sensors and their associated wiring. Sounds like a bit of a nightmare Have a search on here for "crank position sensor", a few people have been clobbered by this sort of issue in the past. Guest Bozza91
Iv just been readin through the threads and iv seen a few that say the n/a doesn't have one or that it's in the distributer, iv been looking at an online manual that says its just behind the harmonic balancer and under the alternator type area. It appears in the manual to be fairly easy to change. I'm going to take a look when I get home later.. Does this sensor just give up randomly? The cars only done 128,000ks
Ian C
I'm not sure if an NA has one or not, I've never owned an NA so I'm not au fait with the smaller differences between the two. I've also never had a CPS problem so I'm not too useful there either
David P
The N/A doesn't have a crank sensor or a cam sensor. The sensor you are looking for is in the distributor.
Guest Bozza91
Ahhh that's why I couldn't find it haha, is it an easy replacement or does the distributer need to come out?
David P
Swap in another used distributor is the simplest and most economic option.

Chris Wilson
From you saying the car was regularly started 9worst thing you can do to an engine in storage, by the way....) i would suggest you fit new plugs, thay have probably got deposits on them from short rich running sessions. If that doesn't fixx it it's often far moore cost effective to have it taken to somewhere that knows how to do basic diagnostics and find the problem quickly and efficiently. It need NOT be a Supra specialist, there's absolutely nothing trick about the 2JJ engine and management that should faze any competent technician. without the right gear though, you could tinker about for weeks, and you must put a value on your OWN time. Nathanj1142
Reviving an old thread here!! Did you ever get the issue sorted? I've just started having similar problems with code 12 and an eml light Thanks
