Building an engine, step by step.

Hi Guys

I'm going to be building a new engine my Supra over the coming months and thought it would be a great idea to document how I get on and hopefully have some input from the more experienced engine builders in the club.

Now I've never build an engine from scratch before, but always wanted to give it a go.

This won't all be done in 1 go, I'll be doing it over a few months as the funds are available to get parts etc.

Please all feel free to chime in guys, the more input and information I get as I go the better the build hopefully will be. It's not about MASSIVE power or chasing numbers, I'm just after a good strong reliable engine and also gain some valuable engine building skills along the way.

So a rough idea on spec is as follows:-

Block - rebored, decked, Cleaned and painted.

Crank - good stock crank, polished and rebalanced.

Piston and Rods - I've spoken to Jamesy @SRD and these, and what they recommend to use. I'm sure they will come up trumps, and give me a good price on these ;)

Clevite engine bearing set

Oil pump - new OEM pump

ARP rod bolts, main bolts and head studs

Cylinder head - port and polish, (not sure if I'll upgrade valves yet), Ferrea dual springs TI retainers, locks and stem seals, 264 cams and HKS cam pulleys.

So starting with the block. I'll buy all the parts as I require them so I guess because the block will be rebored, first item I need to decide on and buy will be the pistons. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the block will be rebored in To a size set by the piston manufacturer, which is the distance from the piston wall to the cylinder wall.

Like I said, I'm going to need all the help I can get so please feel free to contribute.

Cheers

John

Nice, I dont see the make of pistons and rods listed? what sort of boost/bhp are you aiming for?

I'm waiting for Jamesy getting back to me Jamie, to see what SRD recommend and a price for them.

I'm happy with my current power mate if I'm honest. I'm at 1.4 bar at 778hp at the hubs now, if I get a little more then I'm happy but it's not a big deal. This is why I havnt listed billet mains.

Sounds good mate, under 900-1000 fly/hub bhp id not bother with billet mains, same goes for L19 head studs, i only had head lift problems when i started going over 1.8bar.

No intension of going anywhere near 1000 hub Hp. My whole concept of the car has changed. I want it more civilized. More of a pleasure to drive off boost as well as on. This is why I havnt gone for bigger cams either, so I can keep the idle like stock if possible.

Best mod you could do, small modern billet turbo, forget the engine build unless your current engine is getting tired.

I quite like the lag I have Jamie. I love everything about how the car drives on boost, I don't want to change any of that.

Engine wise, I'm not sure if my rings are a little warn and letting a little oil past them.

Michel Lane has kindly offered my loads of engine parts FOC, including a bare block so my engine doesn't have to come out until my new 1 is built, so that's a bonus.

I'll be toning down my exhaust too. Wether I go with an internal butterfly or just resonators and silencers, I'm not sure yet but I want a nice smooth quiet idle as well as at low RPM.

Have you considered renewing the core plugs on the block as part of the build?

I replaced all of mine on my build. Not always necessary but I thought I might as well while I had the engine apart.

I did notice that on the built engines Whiffbitzs sell they replace the plugs as part of the package. I don't know of anyone with core plugs that have failed ever.

Just bought myself some of this. I used it when putting my current engine together and seemed really good stuff.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Torco-MPZ-Engine-Assembly-Lube-12oz-/200785258764?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ebfbbe90c

I got a few bottles of this and used this on all working parts. Prevents wear on components during start up and is very handy if having built the engine you decide to store it for a bit.

Ref the core plugs. There have been a few threads on here before about weeping core plugs. Just seemed a logical thing to do whilst going to the effort to revamp an engine. The cost of the plugs is nominal. Maybe Lee, Paul or Chris Wilson could add comment to this?

If that's the case then it's got to be worth replacing them when the block is at the machine shop.

Lets hope Paul, Lee or Chris will chime in with some technical info on this.

Throw a VVT-i head on there if you want it smooth!

Great to see this thread John.

I will follow this very closely, to get a max of info when I start in a couple of months.

I will also go for Mahle pistons, and my Carillo H-beam HD rods have already arrived together with L19's.

Good luck ;)
