Guest fitzy
Hi all, just purchased 94 NA MkIV and master warning light along with lefthand warning lights (cat, alt and rear lights) all come on intermittently, but at the same time, as if they are linked. There are no obvious problems, but it is annoying. Any ideas would be much appreciated. There is a warning light window on the right hand side but no sign of anything there! Are there supposed to be more lights there? I need to see an owner's manual.
stevie_b
Read the error codes from the ECU. You just need a paperclip and a couple of minutes of your time. Search for it on here about what to do. Not sure what you mean by "There is a warning light window on the right hand side but no sign of anything there"
Nic
An alternator or earth problem can cause those warning lights to illuminate intermittently. The warning lights on the right hand side should illuminate when the ignition is turned on, if they don't then check the wiring is plugged into the back, if it is then try wiggling the connector it could be a problem with dry solder on the PCB. Have you had the dash panels off and checked the connections?
Guest fitzy
Thank you for replies. Sorry for the late response, I work day and night and rarely get time to sit here and get down to the serious business of car talk! I will investigate all ideas and will post results. Many thanks again.
Guest fitzy
There appears to be a warning light window (similar to the LHS one) but I don't see any lights there, ever. I am only assuming there are lights hidden in there somewhere, or perhaps it's a dummy installed to provide symmetry on the dash. I dunno... It's the small smoked plastic rectangle on the RHS that basically mirrors the LHS one.
Digsy
If you never see any warning lights on thr RHS (even when you first key on) then you have a problem with dry joints on the PCB or a didgy connector. The RHS warning lamp panel is notorious for it. I would take the top part of the dash off (5 screws under the part that projects out and contains both LHS and RHS panels) and wiggle the wiring looms around with the key in the "accessory" position to see if they come on. You might get lucky and be able to put the panel back in without having to re wire the connector. At least that will help you with your fault diagnosis. If you get the RHS panel working, I am guessing that when you get the other warning lights you will also get an oil level warning (yellow oil can). I would guess its your alternator on the way out. Guest fitzy
Thanks Digsy. Alternator was replaced by previous owner just prior to me purchasing the vehicle. I'm going to check all associated wiring just to make sure the dude did the job right. Then, I'll take the dash apart and look for the problem with the RHS warning light panel.
