Dnk
you could just put 1 cat back in that will stop it till u get new turbo seals . I don't see any point in doing that as your just hiding the problem, the engine is still burning oil via either leaky valve stem seals or turbo seals. Dnk
im guessing theve been on there way out for a while as i only noticed it since taking the sats out. Only got the engine a month ago, so not very happy about that. think i might make a call to who i bought it off Do you have any idea on mileage and age of the engine and turbo's ? Dnk
Only 70k and it's smoking ? My car needed valve stem seals at around 100k and when we changed them they were totally shot. My turbos are still fine and the car has now done over 135k, it doesn't smoke and a good chunk of the miles has been with max boost raised to 1.2 bar ! Scooter
I don't see any point in doing that as your just hiding the problem, the engine is still burning oil via either leaky valve stem seals or turbo seals. The point is I think that going bpu creates more chance of a leak, so a stock car with worn but not leaking seals will be pushed over the edge by going bpu and reverting back will stop any more leaking not just mask it. So it's a valid solution imo, you know the seals are marginal and will leak with more boost but you may get even a year or two out of them if you leave it stock. Certainly not a bad suggestion if it is the turbo seals.

There is obviously something wrong as my cars been decatted and at 1.2 bar for at least 50,000 miles and doesn't smoke
Josh
Out of interest, I know my valve stem seals are going, as there's a decent puff of blue smoke on start up, but recently, when driving and the engine's warm, if I stop at a junction and pull off, there's a puff of blue smoke there too. Would this point to turbo seals? I first noticed it a few weeks ago, when I revved it a bit (while stationary) after a long drive and there was a puff of blue smoke, similar to the amount I get at first start up. Caesard
I just went full bpu yesterday and this morning on startup, I got lots of white smoke which never happened pre bpu.

Josh
Yes Thanks Nic. Dang. I guess I'll have to sort it out, then
Josh
Out of interest, does anyone know how much the turbo seals are, and maybe a link to a guide on changing them?

It's not a DIY job, it needs a specialist turbo company to rebuild/balance them. Edited August 20, 2012 by Nic (see edit history)
Josh
It's not a DIY job, it needs a specialist turbos company to rebuild/balance them. Ok cool, thank you Would leaving it do any damage, or could it wait (obviously I'll get it done as soon as I can)?

Josh
Time for a nice single kit Josh Don't tempt me! I want to buy Si's PHR single and cast manifold so badly, and this would be a good time, except we've just bought a house. I have confirmation that I could buy it if we had the spare money. Wonder if Si will take £100 a month for 5 months...
Samurai 20V
To the OP, I had the same issue when I went BPU.. Switching from 10W-30 oil to HKS JZ 10W-50 oil made a huge difference, reduced the amount of smoke drastically. From a huge plume every time I approached a traffic light it reduced to just a puff from time to time.. I bought a set of 2nd hand turbos with 45000kms on it, gonna install those soon and hope the seals are decent on them. (Shafts seem ok).. Try the oil first, it will buy you some time till you can decide what to do..

I would be all over that PHR turbo, so nearly bought it last night! Take yours off and sell, would probably pay for half the PHR/mani combo. You know it makes sense..... That turbo was more than likely the one that was on my car, too. I would buy it, but can't really spare cash for everything else needed, especially the ECU and mapping.
