viper
Hi all, since going bpu and after a dyno run, from time to time my exhaust smokes. I cant get my head round what it might be as it only happerns when i come to a stand still, never under load. But its not a constant thing, its after just general driving at a constant speed for a while then coming to a stop say at lights or a roundabout the exhuast lets out a load of white smoke which is quite smelly. I woundered weather im burning oil but iv been keeping an eye on the level and it seems fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciate. Abz
It's the value stems which are shot. Tends to happen when you go BPU as the cats are not there to mask it as much.
hazza
Smelly? Like eggy? May be a catalytic converter? That's if you have got one fitted that is Or maybe over fuelling?...
safcdixon
could be stem seals possibly, i had this type of problem on my old rst it never seemed to smoke on boost but when a traffic lights it was like a smoke machine
Scooter
Hi all, since going bpu and after a dyno run, from time to time my exhaust smokes. going bpu can expose worn turbo seals.

jcbt
Does it smoke on first start up - if it does probably stem seals If it smokes after car has run awhile then its probably turbo seals
skippyboyo1
Turbo seals, I must day I don't miss those days, not a massive job though
Dnk
White smoke isn't valve stem seals If it's valve stem seals it should smoke a little on first start up from cold and be burnt oil smoke and not white
viper
mmmmmm, i have noticed the smoke on first start up once or twice, but its never when on boost or on load. I am causing any damage driving it as it is? is there any way to completly determine if its stem seals or turbo seals? any tell tail signs. thanks all for your help

Turbo oil seals - get some one to follow you, accelerate hard then back off, you will see blue smoke when you come off the throttle. Valve stem seals - blue smoke at first start up after being stood a while.
viper
ok thanks nic, Is there potential fatal damge in the short term if its turbo seals? new set of turbos needed? or a full turbo rebuild? whats involved?
skippyboyo1
ok thanks nic, Is there potential fatal damge in the short term if its turbo seals? new set of turbos needed? or a full turbo rebuild? whats involved? Nothing fatal man, just new seals need fitting which is a turbos off job
Swampy442
The classic tell tale for turbo seals is get the engine hot then leave it idle, if it starts smoking then thats a good pointer to the turbos.
viper
mmmm, ok, is it worth upgrading o Uk spec turbos or just get the seals done? any idea cost of getting the seals replaced?
Guigsy
I don't think uk turbos fit on a jspec do they? If they do you would need the injectors and ecu to go with them to fuel them properly I'd imagine. But not sure Then the ecu will throw a tonne of errors as it will be looking for cruise control and all the other bits that differ. the exhaust flange is different aswell... dan294
Try cr turbos mate. Around the £650-700 mark I think
Swampy442
If you use UK turbos you'll need a different manifold as well.
Nic
is it worth upgrading o Uk spec turbos or just get the seals done? Smaller, laggier UK turbos would be a downgrade
