Supraman
Hi guys, basically the supra has been burning alot of oil, and smokes really badly on boost (Black smoke). The mechanic told me about additives which can sometimes cure the above problem, was just wondering if anyone had any experience with these? Also which oil do you guys all use ? cheers, Ryan
Ian C
Additives won't ever fix missing metal The only way it'd help is by thickening the oil up so much that it doesn't fit out of the gaps so much any more, and the knock-on effect of that in small galleries and the oil pump isn't worth contemplating. It is also more likely that it's the turbo seals, possibly because the turbo is unbalanced due to vane damage. As for the oil question, there is an oil faq lurking in the tech section
Supraman
Thanks for that, so its possibly rebuild time? In regards to the turbo seals the guy was saying he had the inlet manifold off and there was nothing in there so he though it wasnt the turbo seals, does that sound about right ? I also though originally turbos seals, there is oil coming out of the dump valve... Ryan

Geo
Ryan 10w50 Valvoline(used to be silkolene) can you explain more details about your problem? does it only happen on boost? etc does it go away after driving? what garage did you use?
Alex
Oil coming out of the BOV can be normal but also can show elevated oil levels in the breather system and therefore it is a problem in the block. I think you'll have to take the head off to be sure. Research points for the symptoms I can think of are; Valve Stem Oil Seals Oil Viscosity - your oil vs recommended. Piston Ring Failure Turbo failure...this won't necessarily show in the intake side of the turbo. Never add an additive to oil you don't know what the side effects will be. Alex
Silkolene is now Fuchs, not Valvoline...the Fuchs Titan Pro Race S 10w50 is the best I know of. hodge
Is the issue as the car IS on boost or when you lift off the throttle? Also, you original post said black smoke, oil makes blue smoke, black is a fueling issue.
Supraman
On boost its very Smokey. Will get one of the guys to confirm colour tomorrow. Wasnt a specialist garage just a little one in coatbridge who checked it but checkpoint in.Arbroath rebuilt the car less than 3000 miles ago so it will be going back there I think. Sorry for the brief reply I'm in work just now. Will update with more info tomorrow after the Scottish car show. Thanks for all the help so far guys. Supraman
It was also at whifbitz not long ago but I wasn't with the car. My dad said Paul noticed the engine was pretty noisy and the valve stem oil seals could be away. Cheers, Ryan
dandan
Check the little PCV valve on the intake side cam cover. If it's buggered it can cause excessive smoking on boost. What oil is in there anyway?
Swampy442
Thought black smoke was unburnt fuel?
