sod the plates there are some nice looking cars in this thread!!

Anyways back to the point my plates are the same as yours and i have had a few officers looking around my car and have never said anything about the plates.

But the law does state that if you can fit standerd UK plates on your impoted car you must fit them and you can fit them on your supra. But they usaul dont bother with this as long as they are import size which yours are so i really wouldnt worry about it to much he was just being a dick

+ if standard size would be restrictive to airflow ;) which by the looks of your bumper Dan it would? ;)

Print off gov legislation & staple it to his forehead if he pulls you up again for it :D at least you didn't get a fine?!? :)

Slightly off topic and probably one for you Gaz but it is number plate related I know and see lots of people running the full size number plate tucked between the dash and the windscreen with no number plate on the bumper is this actually legal? My mate said he’s driven past traffic loads of times and not been had?

What a load of old rubbish. Its fine, I have one the same size and spun an anpr car down to the yard and it read it fine. He is chatting rubbish.

I wondered if the width of the digits was actually wide enough. If this guy is so much of a jobsworth then he could be awkward.

Has to be mounted forwards of the front axle if I remember right.

It should be mounted on the front of the vehicle mate, to be fair we usually have much better things to do, well I do anyway. It depends on the attitude of the driver if they get stuck on or not.

Just for reference, ANPR is really sharp, I have parked in front of metal fences and it has read them as L111LLL and read posters in windows etc. As with everything Police buy, it was the cheapest system available.

I had a similar run in with the police a few year ago. Here's a copy of the email i received back from the DVLA:

Thank you for your email received on 11/12/09. Your email reference number is 186847.

The Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) regulations 2002 SI no. 2687 came into force in November 2002.

These amendment regulations introduce a new regulation 14A, making special provision in relation to the size and spacing of characters in the registration number of some imported vehicles. These regulations also include the display of motorcycle sizes number plates on imported vehicles. The provision only applies to vehicles imported into the UK which do not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval, and are so constructed, that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration number in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.

Also contained is an amendment to regulation 3, to prohibit the use of a number plate on which the background is patterned or textured, or gives that appearance.

Where a vehicle has been allocated a UK registration number, the number plate must comply with the specification and standards laid out in the Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, as amended. Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display numberplates with smaller characters if the vehicle does not have European Community Vehicle Type Approval and the vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size numberplates.

The dimensions for the smaller sized plate are:

• each character in the registration number must be 64mm high

the width of each character of the number, other than the letter 'I' and the figure '1' must be 44mm

• the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a number must be 10mm

the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10mm

• the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5mm

• the width of a margin between the number and the top and lateral sides of the numberplate must be not less than 5mm

• the space between the bottom of the number/character and the bottom of the plate must not be less than 13mm, but within that space, the space between the bottom of the number and the top of the name and postcode of the person the plate was supplied must not be less than 5mm.

Also, they still threatened to take me to court for the fine and after about 6 months to and fro-ing i said "take me to court" and they said " after reviewing the evidence, we have decided not to procede"

Peter

Shock, they sick mate, as with most big companies, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, isn't aware of the regulations and can't finish a day at work without ballsing something up. Not that I am bitter about work at the moment or anything.

I always find it amusing that "the authorities" claim that a non-standard font or layout cannot be read by their cameras.

The Aussie cops like speed cameras even more than our lot do, but down there it's possible to buy personal plates that have a completely non-standard format. Funny that their cameras can cope but ours can't. :)
