supra_aero
As per thread title, it ceased up causing the belt to slip off. The pulley is totally ceased and sits at an angle so will need replacing. Can I replace the pulley (shiney part in the picture!) on its own? Is it a DIY job? I'll upload a pic a min Edited July 5, 2012 by supra_aero (see edit history)
Swampy442
So has the pulley wheels seized or the tensioner? The pulley itself will be ok but the bearing inside is goosed. Can be replaced no problems.
Jos
As above, if the wheel has seized it's not hard to change the bearing, I bought one for less than 10 pounds
supra_aero
The wheel/pulley no longer spins. The tensioner is not moving either when I try and push it by hand but not sure how its meant to be tightened/moved Tx for your help
stevie_b
I don't think you'd be able to move the tensioner arm by hand, not without using a ratchet or breaker bar as a torque multiplier: the spring's too strong. Try putting a socket and long ratchet on the pulley wheel, and turn clockwise. You should find the arm then moves clockwise.
supra_aero
Thanks Stevie. I think from a bit of reading just the pulley and bearing are the issue. I'll get a new timing belt and tensioner to be safe. If they just need the bearing and timing belt the better. Thanks all. Not a big job it seems
stevie_b
The belt we're talking about is the auxiliary belt, not the timing belt. The timing belt has meaty teeth in it, the aux belt has small grooves running along its length. you can't see any part of the timing belt unless you take some covers off of the engine. It sounds like you just need to replace the bearings in the tensioner pulley. You probably don't need to replace the tensioner arm itself (which no doubt cost £££). supra_aero
ahh thanks Stevie. Price has come down a bit then AA man said Cambelt/timing belt which is what threw me - I thought it was internal too! Thanks alot !
Al Massey
Im a little confused at something. Is it metal pulley on the TT as on my car and my spare is plastic In case a plastic one is fine, my spare and bearings work perfectly fine and you can have it as I've bought a nice shiny one from whiffbits
Swampy442
Plastic pulley was just an update to the metal pulley mate, it will be fine.
stevie_b
New bearings can be inserted into the metal version of the pulley, but not the plastic version (the whole pulley wheel would need to be replaced). That's the only practical difference AFAIK.
supra_aero
Massey has kindly offered me his plastic pulley. Thanks so much for your generosity . Great club spirit, thank you all.
Dnk
ahh thanks Stevie. Price has come down a bit then AA man said Cambelt/timing belt which is what threw me - I thought it was internal too! Thanks alot ! That's a little worrying if he didn't know the difference.
D8MOA
It looks to me like the bearing has failed in the wheel hence the funny angle and the 2 shiny areas where it's touched
keron
It looks to me like the bearing has failed in the wheel hence the funny angle and the 2 shiny areas where it's touched either that or also the center 14mm bolt that goes through the middle of the bearing into the tentioner may also be damaged? it threads into alloy and they are very easy to cross thread so i would check it before you try and change the wheel only. personally, i would change the tentioner too.... i got your pm btw aero.... i have used tentioners in, belts in stock and the tentioners have new bearings in them. if you get stuck just let me know but take the pulley off first and inspect the thread which it goes into...if thats goosed, then you need a new tentioner

Chris Wilson
Can I buy your old pulley wheel off you if it isn't bent? The pressed steel wheel is very thin, the forces involved when the bearing seized *MAY* have deformed it, but if not I will buy it off you! So take it off carefully, you just undo the 14 mm socket sized bolt holding it to the arm. Don't lose the captive nut on the other side of the arm!. Good luck. Cheers.
