Rust on valve stems

Jos

Recommended Posts

Took the valves out of my cylinder head today and almost all the inlet valves have rust on the stems, in the area where the valve stem seals are.

Did anyone else have this, can the valves be saved or do I need new valves? If so, I think a reconditioned head is a better option.

Ideas/ options anyone?

Rust ?

It would depend if the valve stems are pitted or not, you could try cleaning them with

very fine wet & dry paper & WD40, put the valve in a pillar drill and spin it up

Yes, I thought it strange too, they are pitted, will post pics tommorow. I was wondering if anybody else had this.

Yes, I had the smoke on startup, and I was not running water/meth, my car was very stock, low miles, but stood still for a long period. maybe it had been started numerous times but not warmed up?

After looking a bit better, it are really pits, and few deposits.

Here are the pic's, and thank you guys for thinking with me .

That's nasty.

I try to see the bright side of it, and am happy that I did not try to replace my valve stem seals with the head on the block, then maybe I would not have noticed this and have more damage later.

What I find strange though is that it's only on the inlet side, visualy the outlet valves look fine.
