hadyn
Im thinking of removing my rear seats when i go drag racing at bovingdon on Sunday. Is this actually a good idea?Naturally saving weight should be a good thing, but i've read a few posts on here that losing weight over the rear axle could be detrimental. How true is this? When i usually take the car for a run down the strip i remove the spare wheel and tool kit and this seems to have no detrimental effects. Kopite
it's meant to be a bit of a barsteward to remove the back of the rear seats isn't it? obviously the lower parts pull out but weigh nothing
hadyn
its not that hard is it?
Homer
I'm in the same dilemma mate! I'm driven the car a few times with the interior stripped. It *feels* quicker in a straight line, but is very loose on the corners, probably due to lack of weight over the rear. It would also spin the wheels much easier on a standing start, so I'm really not sure if this will help 1/4 mile times. I guess the ideal approach is to move as much weight as possible from the front of the car to the rear. I.e. battery, and errr.. well maybe go on a diet? Kopite
i've never had a reason to try, few people have and said it took longer than they thought. don't think they'd make that much diff to be honest
hadyn
Might just keep them in place then for the 1/4 mile

Jake
It's only difficult if you don't know where the bolts are and you're the kind of twit that takes his car to a garage to get the oil checked, like Ro.
colsoop
I havent got any rear seats in mine at the moment, along with most of the interior, i personally dont think a rear seat will make much of a difference TBH, it only weighs about 15kg's. You may as well take out the passenger seat as well, thats quite heavy, along with the spare wheel. There was a link posted a while ago where someone posted the weight of all the different parts on the supra.
Aerotop Dave
I did read somewhere about a metal plate in the glovebox that weights a fair amount too (1.5kg maybe?). I think it was on Supraforums. Depends how mad you want to go on the weight saving front.
Suprasteve
Its very, very easy to remove them. Just 4 bolts to undo and thats it! i agree its a 5 min job, peice of cake i did not notice any difference in handling but thought it felt faster but think it was all in the head. It is much louder though cos there no sound proofing in the boot.
SteveL
I took the back out of mine and left the seat base in - as it weighs very little and keeps the sound levels down. I need to get something pretty large in and have left the back out since ...... Can't say if it makes any difference - but as a placebo it works :-))

colsoop
Bringing this thread back up i found that website that gives weights for parts you can find it here (under kerb weight calculator) I also weighed my passenger seat today along with the tope part of the rear seat and the pair of them were 28 kg. I'm sure the police wouldn't be too happy about having nothing to stop stuff flying forwards!!
SteveL
Fair point Trev, what I had to get in there did rest up against both the front seats, so it wasn't going anywhere... Haven't put it back in yet, but I don't have anything in the boot either.

hadyn
How effective is removing the front headlamp unit then? Wont it just add drag to a BPU supe? I have the stock air box.

I have the stock air box.have read it can give you a couple of tenths off your time. its just to get some cold air on your induction. you can also reset your ecu and pull trac fuse too. dont forget to fold your wing mirrors in lol
Pete
All sounds like a massive waste of time to me on your daily driver. You want to know your real world every day figures. Not so you can tell your mates "It does a 1/4 mile in 11''15 if I rip the interior out!"
dangerous brain
I've seen some rex's stripped out for drag use. You could always get a 93 plate N/A for very little money single turbo it and empty every item from the inside like the rex's you see. lightweight single seat and steering wheel and thats it inside. hadyn
But im not talking about using as a daily driver just for drag runs. I always remove the spare wheel and tools from the boot as well as fold in the wing mirrors Whats the legality of driving without one headlamp to and from an event?
