Guest TimvM
Hi all, Sorry for immediately posting a help request after registering. Well, to be honest, I had a full membership on my other account; Tim_v_M. However, as I'm planning on selling the Supra I didn't want to sign up for full membership again. Sorry. My problem; At the moment I'm trying to undo the mph conversion on my car. I've stripped down all the dash panels to find the converter, but no luck, I've no idea where to find it. I've saw on other threads the converter was taped at the left upper corner behind the dash, mine isn't. Are there any other places where a converter can be fitted? My speedo is converted, so is the odo meter, but the conversion hasn't delimited the car. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/3743/20120703122235.jpg http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3282/201207031222201.jpg http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/4208/20120703122210.jpg http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/688/20120703110033.jpg Original size images: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/404/20120703110033.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/811/20120703122210.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/201207031222201.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/20120703122235.jpg/ Thanks a lot! TubbyTwo
Have you checked around the ECU area in the passenger foot well, or on top of the gearbox (if its a real bodge).
Guest TimvM
No I haven't as I supposed the converter normally is fitted inside the dash. Will give that a try, thanks.
a98pmalcolm
there should be some wires cut into the plug that goes unto your odo meter (mileage display). Follow those wires and you should find it... If there is one lol
Guest TimvM
The car is absolutely converted, lol . Weirdly, the plug for the odo doesn't look like that there are wires cut in to it. Also the plug for the speedo looks original. Also at the ECU area are no signs of a converter. I really have no idea where to look next xD. It turns out to be another plug, with a cover and marker on it. What use had that plug? stevie_b
In that case, I'd look around the top of the gearbox. As the car's not delimited, it's unlikely that it'll be near the ECU.
stevie_b
PS the converters can be very small. Some of them look like 3 or 4 wires going into what looks like a piece of sticky tape folded onto itself, about the size of your thumbnail.
thomo8568
Could be worth a look inside the clocks as that's where I found mine after looking for it for weeks.

Will try that tomorrow. I guess you mean under the car, not the gearknob area? Could be worth a look inside the clocks as that's where I found mine after looking for it for weeks. I can't mess things up when I open the clocks?
TubbyTwo
I can't mess things up when I open the clocks? Just be carefull and logical, also take a picture of the fuel needle position as you will need to put this back in the same place.
Guest TimvM
Nothing in the clocks. After removing the plastic cover in front and the surroundings I was able to look under the plates and the inside is empty. (beside the normal electronics ) So, nothing; - inside the dash - at the ECU - in the clocks only gearbox left then?
Digsy
If it was converted at the gearbox then the car would also be delimited, surely?
thomo8568
This is how mine looked inside my speedo, almost oem looking.
Digsy
What if someone had actually bought a UK speedo head and put that in the car? I believe the pulse train is the same on J spec and UK models and I think the speedos are interchangable. Not sure about the odometer. Abz
If it was converted at the gearbox then the car would also be delimited, surely? I would have thought it would need to be near the ECU to delimit it? As the wires plug into that.
dr_jekyll
the inline converters from the gearbox also delimit by stepping down the signal , the ecu wont reach the limter until 180ish mph

I might want to check that again. What if someone had actually bought a UK speedo head and put that in the car? I believe the pulse train is the same on J spec and UK models and I think the speedos are interchangable. Not sure about the odometer. I Think not. It did have a nice MPH sticker covering the KPH indication.
Guest TimvM
Checked the clocks again. Nothing in there. I'm going to double check the dash now and if I can't find it there I'll drive to my local garage to put the car on a car lift to be able to check the gearbox. Otherwise I'll give up, unless one of you has an idea.
Guest TimvM
Just came back from the garage, I've found a small black box fitted at the end of the gearbox. It has a blue sticker on it, but I wasn't able to read it. It looks like it was fitted afterwards as it's secured by a (uncut) tie-wrap. The device looks like it is linked between both sensors (and they are the speedsensors?). I've made some pictures, hopefully someone can tell me if I finally found the converter.... http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4460/20120704105333.jpg http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/4500/20120704105317.jpg http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/8277/20120704105138.jpg http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/8725/20120704105136.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6607/20120704105118.jpg Edited July 4, 2012 by TimvM (see edit history)
TubbyTwo
Looks pretty much the same as the one I found behind my dash, I reckon thats the delimiter you have been hunting for!:
Guest TimvM
Woohoo! Great. It actually looks the same as the one on your picture! Great feeling too that I almost stripped my whole interior for nothing xD. Is there no doubt about it that it possibly isn'tt be my converter, so I won't remove something I do need? Well, now I've found it, can I simply cut the wires and reconnect the original ones?
TubbyTwo
I would trace all the wires if you can and just remove the converter as you said and put everything back to stock. It doesnt look stock, so I would say if its connected to the speed sensor on the gearbox its got to be the delmiter.
stevie_b
As TubbyTwo said, cutting the wires isn't a good idea. That will mean your speedo doesn't get any signal at all.
