Can't find my MPH converter

Hi all,

Sorry for immediately posting a help request after registering. Well, to be honest, I had a full membership on my other account; Tim_v_M. However, as I'm planning on selling the Supra I didn't want to sign up for full membership again. Sorry.

My problem; At the moment I'm trying to undo the mph conversion on my car. I've stripped down all the dash panels to find the converter, but no luck, I've no idea where to find it. I've saw on other threads the converter was taped at the left upper corner behind the dash, mine isn't.

Are there any other places where a converter can be fitted? My speedo is converted, so is the odo meter, but the conversion hasn't delimited the car.

Thanks a lot!

The car is absolutely converted, lol :p. Weirdly, the plug for the odo doesn't look like that there are wires cut in to it. Also the plug for the speedo looks original. Also at the ECU area are no signs of a converter. I really have no idea where to look next xD.

(At first I thought the white 'thing' in the last photo was the converter. It turns out to be another plug, with a cover and marker on it. What use had that plug?

In that case, I'd look around the top of the gearbox. As the car's not delimited, it's unlikely that it'll be near the ECU.

Will try that tomorrow. I guess you mean under the car, not the gearknob area?

Could be worth a look inside the clocks as that's where I found mine after looking for it for weeks.

I can't mess things up when I open the clocks?

Nothing in the clocks. After removing the plastic cover in front and the surroundings I was able to look under the plates and the inside is empty. (beside the normal electronics ;) )

So, nothing;

- inside the dash

- at the ECU

- in the clocks

only gearbox left then?

This is how mine looked inside my speedo, almost oem looking.

Thanks. I might want to check that again.

What if someone had actually bought a UK speedo head and put that in the car? I believe the pulse train is the same on J spec and UK models and I think the speedos are interchangable.

Not sure about the odometer.

I Think not. It did have a nice MPH sticker covering the KPH indication.

Checked the clocks again. Nothing in there. I'm going to double check the dash now and if I can't find it there I'll drive to my local garage to put the car on a car lift to be able to check the gearbox.

Otherwise I'll give up, unless one of you has an idea.

Just came back from the garage, I've found a small black box fitted at the end of the gearbox. It has a blue sticker on it, but I wasn't able to read it. It looks like it was fitted afterwards as it's secured by a (uncut) tie-wrap. The device looks like it is linked between both sensors (and they are the speedsensors?).

I've made some pictures, hopefully someone can tell me if I finally found the converter....

Woohoo! Great. It actually looks the same as the one on your picture! Great feeling too that I almost stripped my whole interior for nothing :D xD. Is there no doubt about it that it possibly isn'tt be my converter, so I won't remove something I do need?

Well, now I've found it, can I simply cut the wires and reconnect the original ones?
