The Raven
OK stearing rack, PS banjo, twisted thread. In haste to get my car on the road i think the bolt was cross threaded, i bought a new bolt but it tightens so far then slips. Needless to say P/S fulid pees out. I have one of two options in mind. One hope someone knows the size of the hole and try a tap to sort out the thread. Swap for a new rack.........This does not look like a fun job. Any advise suggestions, prayers, money, or haribo would help.
Geo
can you not re-tap it?
The Raven
That was my first thought, Anyone have any idea what size tap it is? I will have to buy the tools i need. I think its 14mm.
mwilkinson
Russ I bought a cheap but complete tap and dye set of eBay a year or so ago for approx £40. So that's an easy thing to get. Have you a set of vernier calipers and a thread gauge? If not get these and measure the bolt. Thread pitch will likely be 1mm.
Nic
If you've stripped the threads you could either re-tap it to a larger size (but you'll need to find a larger bolt) or you could fit a Helicoil (an easy DIY job).
