bigbloodyturbo
I'm just about to install my gauges and I'm planning on taking the turbo off and tapping the 1/8th npt fitting that the probe is fixed to into the turbine housing, I want to put it right where the scroll starts in the middle, basically if you looked in to the turbine housing inlet you would see a probe right in the middle. Is this ok or does it need to be in my cast manifold??
Swampy442
Mine was fitted in the same place.
bigbloodyturbo
so basically just above the turbin inlet flange and in the middle? How much should it protrude into the gas flow? 1 cm from the wall or more?
bigbloodyturbo
Anyone?
Wez
Mounted mine in the cast manifold but it was a real PITA to drill.
bigbloodyturbo
Mounted mine in the cast manifold but it was a real PITA to drill. I've got the turbo off the car now and I'm about ready to drill the turbine housing. I thought about the manifold itself but I've got a cast effort and there's very little room to actually drill it without fouling anything else or putting in the runner for cyl 6 or 1. The turbine housing I guess would tell me what the turbo is seeing rather than what a certain cylinder would. I'm not looking forward to drilling the housing and tapping it should be a barrel of laughs and all.
Robzki
Should be on runner 6 or its a near pointless exercise.
bigbloodyturbo
Should be on runner 6 or its a near pointless exercise. Why is this? I've just finished putting everything together and the probe is now in the turbine housing approx 1" in from the flange which works out at approx 5-6" from the port on the head. Robzki
As no6 is always going to be the hottest cylinder as it is the furthest from the airflow and closest to the bulkhead, its why toyota fitted the Uks with an air scoop and ducting to no6. The reason for having an egt is to monitor the exhaust gases as they leave the combustion chamber. after even a few inches you are monitoring a heat sink effect of the surrounding parts as much as the gasses, so it will be slower toreact to changes. They are fairly pointless in my opinion anyway as by the time you notice a change the damage has already been done.
bigbloodyturbo
well it's done now, i've got a cast manifold so there wasn't much room and either way its not actually that far from no.3 and 4 as they come straight off the ports and out to the outlet flange unlike a tubular manifold, measuring it the distance from my probe to the port is 4 or 5".
