Guest Stevo82
Hi, My turbo(s) are leaking oil causing sporadic smoke plumes, apparently a new turbo costs around GBP1300. I will probably go single turbo later this year, but for now I just want to stop the smoke. I found some CT12B rebuild kits on ebay ( from Japan Precision Auto Parts ), they are located in Australia and are quite cheap, AU$75 (GBP50). Are these worth it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/CT12B-TURBO-REBUILD-KIT-SUPRA-2JZGTE-LANDCRUISER-HIACE-/170670701124?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27bcc43a44#ht_2154wt_1163 I live in Namibia and if I want the turbos overhauled I have to send them to South Africa and the rebuild can cost up to GBP400 per turbo, and this means my car will be without turbos for up to a month. Any advice? Also, can I replace the CT12B turbos with the CT20A turbos without any modifications? Thanks! Iky
These kits are not really reccomended. There's no telling how good the parts are. You are just replacing the seals but the chances are that your shaft will be worn also so even with the new seals, It might not work or only be a temp fix. Depend low long you need them to last until you go single. If they shit themselves then Ive heard you can get bits into your engine. Also it is reccomended that you get the shaft re-balanced after dismantling. The best idea might be to source a pair of decent used turbos and just replace yours. I hope I have helped. Guest Stevo82
It helps a lot yes thank you, I was on the fence about this one. I phoned around today and sent out many emails during the week, couldn't find any turbos though. I can however buy a second hand 2JZ GTE engine, the cheapest one is around GBP 1200, but they can't tell me which turbo it has on or whether its jspec etc (and I don't know whether my engine is jspec either because it was a non turbo but had a transplant). Most second hand engines are also VVTI, mine isn't, so I don't know whether the turbos will fit my engine. If I'm not mistaken you can have either the CT20A or CT12B turbos, and it looks like the CT20A has CT20A stamped on it and the CT12B only has says Toyota? One dealer I phoned today said their 2JZ GTE has CT12A's on. Do you maybe know whether I'll be able to take the turbos off any 2JZ GTE variant and fit them to my engine without any modification? Swampy442
Don't you have any turbo specialists in your country? A repair kit is all well and good but you still have to have the turbos very finely balanced as any out of balance forces at 100,000 rpm will wear them out very quickly
