Rear disc problems !!!

Brothy

Recommended Posts

I have bought some new rear discs and pads for my n/a j spec supra, on the passenger side the disc only comes off a couple of cm before it seems to catch on the hub/shoe cover :( ive tried hitting it with a hammer and forcing it but it wont come off :( and the drivers side 17mm caliper bolt will not come out and keeps rounding. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions for these problems as i wont be dtiving it till there all done

I think J spec disc removal is the same as uk, your rear disc should have ( around the hub part, where your handbrake shoes are) some holes, one of them should have a rubber bung in, if it hasn't then you need to get down low and shine a torch.

What you need to do is turn the disc/hub till one of the holes is at "bottom dead centre" have a look in the hole, if it is the right hole you should see a star wheel in the vertical plane, if its not the right hole you need to turn to the next hole and repeat till you can see the little wheel.

Once you have the wheel in sight you need to stick a screw driver through the hole so you can turn the wheel, I think you have to turn it upwards, this should loosen off the disc, it may need a tap with a plastic/rubber mallet, if its still not coming off try turning the wheel downwards, I just can't remember off hand which way, my head says up, but.

That 17 mm bolt can be a nightmare if it's not been loosened for ages! Soak it in WD40 for 10 mins and then get a breaker bar on it. Also, make sure you are turning it the right way - remember you are on the other side of the bolt, not looking directly at it! I made that mistake....more than once stupidly!

As for the disc not coming off, Bob's post should see you right :)

You need to do exactly what Bob said.

You shouldn't need to use excessive force, with the disc coming away from the hub for say 10mm or so relatively easily and then they getting stuck is a classic case of not winding back the shoes.

When you turn the star type wheel it retracts the brake shoes away from the drum which you have to do as the shoes wear themselves into the drum as both the drum and shoes wear. I always forget which way to turn the star type wheel like Bob said so you may have to change direction.

Obviously an indication that you've turned it in the incorrect direction is that you won't be able to rotate the disc.

Thanks for the advice, got the disc off straight away, one more question, does the star shape nut need to be tightened when the new disc has been put on ?

yes make sure you do tighten it, or you'll find yourself taking the wheel back off because the brake shoes will be hitting the inside of the disc and ensure your handbrake works correctly again by applying it and try spinng the wheel by hand whilst its still jacked up

Yes, but iirc you need to then loosen it by half a turn or something otherwise the handbrake stays on I think. There is a thread floating about somewhere - I'll have a quick look for it

You adjust the handbrake shoes with the star shaped nut, you don't just tighten

it up.

As you turn the nut either way the shoes move in or out, you turn the

nut then you rotate the disc till you feel the disc dragging on the shoes

and then back it off slightly.

This is done by feel which you learn after doing it a few times
