You can run the engine for a short amount of time to see if your noise goes away, obviously with

the aux belt removed the a/c, alternator, water pump and power steering wont work as their driven by

the aux belt

Thanks Dunk, just let me get this clear, the belt you have highlighted in yellow can be removed and the engine can be rune safely for a short amount of time ? Is this belt not part of the timing set up? forgive my ignorance

thanks for your patience

The belt i have highlighted can be removed but not for too long as it drives the water pump

so your engine will over heat if run for any great length of time.

The timing belt is a totally differant belt and drives the 2 cam shafts from the crank.

Thanks Durk, got my silly head round that, was about to post the penny had dropped, have been unwell lately and the tabs make things a bit misty sometimes. To be honest the noise sounds like its coming from behind the top of the plastic cover covering the timing belt?

Is the aux belt easy to put back on again, no need for ra or anything to come out?

Much appreciated help and advise

Should be simple enough to put back on, just reverse how you take it off and make sure it

goes round the pulleys the right way.

This photo shows the cam belt going round both the cam pulleys and down to the

crank pulley which you cant see

Good morning, and thanks to everyone for taking the time to try and help. I am going to remove the aux belt and run the car, the noise is normally apparent very quickly, so that should be the acid test if the noise is in the aux belt run. But I am *fairly* confident that the noise is somewhere behind on the timing belt run. I have a stethoscope and it clearly picks the noise out when rested on top front of the timing belt cover. We were still looking for a couple of my fingers last night -:)

The guy who carried out the job bluffed that the noise was probably there before and I didn't notice it, but the one thing I am sure of is that this engine was remarkably

whisper silent on tick over-definitly no noise.

I will check back with the findings.

Best wishes

James

Once again thanks for all the help

Logie, I have already put plan B into action. I worked with cars all my life, but have had health problems lately which make me forgetful and short term memory is melted sometimes, its hard to believe what can happen to someone in such a short period of time-but hats another story.

Good wishes

Thanks

Removed the aux belt and the noise was still there, slightly clearer, probably because the other moving parts were silent. Noise is just behind the cover where the front centre bolt secures the cover. Could the belt be too tight? Its a nasty occult noise.

Going to garage tomorrow

Well, here we have it. Took timing covers off and the noise was diminished and became quite subtle , the acoustics in the cover where amplifying the noise- but still was not solved, everything looking in order to be honest. I noticed on top of the engine recommended oil w10-30 semi. I went to Toyota and they asked what oil I had used. I had used 5 30 fully synth. Also recommended by Toyota. They advised me to change back and gave me 10-40 semi.

Changed oil and toyota filter, noise completely gone, not even a single remnant of it..gone kaput bye bye.

Cured

Maybe the engine was used to the heaver oil? I don't know? I would like to hear post mortiem reflection from anyone on the forum

Many thanks again to everyone for listening, patience and help.Good result

Sincerely appreciated

Have you done the Tipex test on the crank damper. if it's slipping badly it may affect the A/C and the PAS. Is the clutch engaging on the A/C pulley? You can see the pulley drive the inner section attached to the shaft if you get someone to turn the A/C on and off a few times while you watch the front of the A/C pulley. if it's not engaging it may be an electrical issue or it may have lost gas. Low gas pressure means the safety switch is not operated and the clutch will not engage.
