Power steering problem

Recommended Posts

The car hasnt run for a while and it decided to piss fluid out of the power steering reservoir. I have removed the air con and was waiting for bits to arrive. Before I put the belt back on I span the pump and it took a few spins before it felt like it was moving fluid. Any way put the belt on fired it up and it wined. Brimmed the reservoir and tried to bleed the system but it wouldn't take any Fluid. Also had that vacuum of that attaches to the pump what does that do. I have my bov t into it.

Any one had a similar problem. I can't remember it whining before. It just doesn't sound right

Cheers antno

your not suppost to brim them with fluid, if you look they have hot and cold marks on the lid dipstick.

check the rubber pipes for leakes.

is the fluid frothing/bubbling with the cap off? that would indicate air in system

I know but Ive lost say quarter of a litre so I thought it would take 100ml straight away

Na no bubbles at all. Think I've just got an air lock.

Any tips or just work shop manual way.

best way mate,.

is fill up close lid..

turn full lock left and right (really push it so you can hear it whine) back and forth..

take it for a drive if possible.

let it cool down - open cap fill up and repeat..

you will see tons of bubbles mate..

keep doing this till its pure fluid, it can take a while 30 mins or so.

have you got too much fluid in there?

i didnt have too much issue bleeding.

front jacked up, lid off resivour, turn all they way left, then all the way right, keep toping up to correct level

The level was fine to start with just a bit weird why it decided to chuck out loads of fluid out of the cap. Its fine now just sat the mrs in there for half an hour just hope it doesn't do it again.

I didnt think turning the steering hard onto full lock with the pump whining was a good idea ?

The reservoir is the highest point so theres no need to jack the car up either !

i think the jacking up part is so you don't damage the tyre

I think it would take more than that to damage a tyre, i did mine in 3-4 turns either way with the

car on the ground and has been fine since.

It's just bad practice to turn the steering wheel while the car is stationary. Probs won't have the slightest problem. Mine did take about 30 mins till I stoped Seeing bubbles but I suspect if I had a hot r888 on the front after 30 mins of turning there could be a slight flat spot. No saying you would do it on a hot tyre but in theory.
