Branners
My work desktop machine went phutt the other day, system board failure. So I tracked down a suitable replacement. Our technical consultant suggested I use an SSD drive instead of a normal hard drive so I thought I would give it a go. I'm amazed at the performance difference. Windows7 takes 10 seconds to boot from turn on to get to the logon screen, there's no delay when opening applications or windows and it shuts down in about 5 seconds. I will be using SSD on all my future computers, makes the machine behave how it always should have. So just thought I would mention it. Littler
SSD's are great popped one in my MacBook pro and it takes no time at all to access anything!
ManwithSupra
Yeah SSD's are good, I have one in my PC and laptop.
RobUK
Yeah had SSD for about 18 months now and they are amazing! On another note do you have any contacts that would be able to get a temporary Internet connection into Hyde park? We are looking at satellite but would prefer hard wire... BT lead time is 12 weeks... Which isn't ant option... I have heard of a company called conference geeks or similar... Any thought JB? Branners
I would give a chap called Andrew Set a call at Urban Wimax. They can usually have a 10mb/10mb connection up and running in 24 hours assuming they can see the right buildings in London. We use them at all our venues as a failover for the fibre. It is not hard wire, but it is microwave and we have never had any issues with it except when a crane got in the way of one aerial at Paddington. If they mount it high enough on a pole it should be fine. Aerial is smaller than a piece of A4 paper. Mention my name, they know me well. The other option is a company called Fluidata based out of London Bridge. THey can fit a 180mb/10mb adsl/sdsl bonded solution usually in 5 weeks, but that needs BT lines to work. Not sure if you are in a tent or semi permanent building. Both those suppliers have got us out of many holes.
RobUK
Cheers JB I'll give them a call on Monday, we are putting up a temporary store in hydepark for the Olympics... It's to sell merchandise...
Pixelfill
Not sure whether you are interested, but one thing I found when I installed my SSD was that it became nearly impossible to access Safe Mode. my BIOS uses the same key for boot device selection as the Windows start menu, leaving me a nanosecond window of opportunity to hit the key to get the correct menu - I set up Windows to present the safe mode menu for a second to give me that opportunity should I need it. but yeah SSD blistering performance best upgrade ever (for windows 7, heard bad things about early OS's due to lack of support for trim) Mike
Branners
I did notice the HP splash screen shoots past in less than a second where with the normal drive it was 5 or 6 seconds. I better take a look at that setting just in case.
Ian C
I've run an SSD as my OS drive for a few years, it's fantastic. I also fitted an OCZ RevoDrive for film editing work and the results were phenomenal - it's an internally striped PICe card so it runs at a genuine 600mb/s
