Decating my car (1st only)

Hello all,

I have not undertaken any exhaust work before (with the exception of removing heat shields and heat wrapping) and was wondering how easy it is to remove the 1st cat converter from my NA import SZ-R?

Would i be able to do the job with my car on jack stands?

Are the fixing bolts easy to access?

Other than the actual decat pipe, what other supplies or parts do i need? (gaskets etc.?)

any help would be much appreciated.[COOL][/COOL]

It is a PITA on a TT, and I would imagine it to be the same on an NA.

I did mine on axle stands, but I had to jack the car up, put the stands in, jack the car higher, and raise the stands to give the room needed under the car.

If replacing the cat, I'd go for new gaskets (availabe online pretty cheap), no need for exhaust paste or anything like that, however I couldnt find a downpipe to decat gasket, so I pasted that join.

At the top of the cat, there are 3 bolts, should be either 12mm or 14mm iirc. PITA to get to, but should crack off pretty easily (mine did).

I dropped the whole exhaust off, because I wanted to give it a clean and a bit of heat wrap anyway, but not 100% sure if its necessary.

At the bottom of the cat, there will be 2 bolts, again should be 12mm or 14mm, which will probably be harder to crack off due to being in the elements all the time. (one of mine I had to cut the bolt off)

From there, remove the cat, replace with decat and gaskets, do up bolts, job done :)

can be done on axle stands, although the front 3 nuts that bolt to the manifold can be a right royal pain in the harris. Mine came off fairly easily(TT) but had to use several extension bars with a good fitting ratchet. It is a good idea to soak the fixings you want to remove with wd40/duck oil for a few days before.

Cool,

Sounds pretty easy as long as i can reach the 3 front nuts etc.

All that is left to do is to purchase the parts and get cracking (see what i did there, cracking the the nuts! ... nevermind).

Oh yeah, one last thing what is a "boost spike gasket" (pretty sure i don't need this as its NA but i am curious.

Was gonna get this one but not sure if it fits the NA. Any help?

I assume a boost spike gasket is what's known on here as a restrictor ring. It's not needed for an NA :)

Hi

That's for a tt not the N/A, the One you want is a Y shape. They are a bit o a pita to fit but not as bad as a tubular manifold. Best way I found was to remove the full manifold, then remove the cat once you have it off the car.

Ian

OK,

thats a bit strange.

Mine definately does not have the Y shaped section.

There is a single pipe going into the Cat and single out. As far as i am aware the only bit of my exhaust that is not standard is from the 2nd Cat back (backbox/muffler etc.)

Single pipe front to back (from manifold down) but there are defo still 2 cats on it.
