boost control

I just read that running over one bar of boost will shatter the ceramic turbine blades on j-spec models!

how true is this??

Where did you read that? Many of us are running 1.2 bar with no problems. Obviously running turbos at a higher boost will shorten their life to some extent. This is true for J-spec and UK Spec turbos.

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.

ouch. so is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

whats the pressure when you remove both cats?

When you remove both cats on a j spec. It will boost to around 1.4 bar which will knacker your turbos very quickly. You will need a restrictor ring fitting at the end of the second decat pipe to limit your boost to say 1.1 bar. Then if you want to increase it to 1.2 bar you will need a boost controller to raise the boost to 1.2 bar. Or you could just make the hole bigger in the restrictor ring so you run at 1.2 all the time.

Chris Wilson (on this board) sells the restrictor rings and decat pipes. Send him a email, he will sort you out.

Hope this helps

I dont run 1.2 bar as i dont fancy maxing out my stock j-spec injectors on full boost :) I keep it a 'nice' 1 bar :)

You are maxing out your injectors at 1 bar :D

As soon as an FCD comes into play you are at 100% duty cycle, so you may as well run 1.2bar to use up all that extra fuel.

Let me guess, Japanese Performance mag right? Who for some reason asked Fensport who know next to nothing about Supras. The reason most people don't run more than 1.2BAR is not actually to do with breaking turbos, but the fact that you don't have sufficient fueling for any more than that, which will cause very high exhaust gas temps at the very least, which will in turn give your turbos a lot more grief. Plus the turbos are out of their efficiency range at 1.2BAR anyway.

If you have correct fueling and intercooling etc you can run more than 1.2BAR. I run 1.3, despite being out of their efficiency window you do still get more power than at 1.2.

Other errors in that Jap performance quote are that the Jspec has 280bhp (it doesn't, more like 310-320ish), that you should decat with a HKS downpipe (which will cause overboosting for sure on a jspec) and that you need a boost controller (you don't if you remove the cats boost will rise anyway). Oh, and that if you want to get 340bhp you need hybrid turbos and a fuel pump (but strangely no mention of anything to provide extra fueling!). Not true, a simple decat will get you there no problem at all.
