hogmaw
OK so I was just having my mind blown by looking through this when I thought what must is look like to have VY Canis Majoris as far away from us now as the sun is? Assuming of course we're not burnt to a crisp, would half the visible sky be red, or what?
tkddav3
wow....some of those stars make our sun look soooo tiny. really does make you think that.

SupraStar 3000
After looking at that, to assume Earth is the only planet to have intelligent life on it, seems unlikely. Pretty amazing.
Abz
After looking at that, to assume Earth is the only planet to have intelligent life on it, seems unlikely. Pretty amazing. According to a lot of people we are just an accident, a freak of nature. Talking about the planet BTW.
Swampy442
And some people think we're the only life in the universe, thats whats truely staggering.

Graham1984
According to a lot of people we are just an accident, a freak of nature. Talking about the planet BTW. With yours and Ed's thread can we really count ourselves as intelligent life In all seriousness I watched a documentary on youtube about how our moon is the total fluke that keeps up alive, There is an interesting series on "If we had no moon" where the earth slows down to the point that after 5years each day would consist of 13days worth of sunlight followed by 13days worth of night time, snow ect and that 26day period would be the equivalent of just one day/night cycle. The earth's axis and 38degree tilt it is on now would be gone and the polar caps would melt and most the oceans would head to the north and south pole leaving places like Miami and Tokyo dry beaches, Most of the equator line would be uninhabitable due to lack of oxygen and places like Denver would be the same due to it's height already it would feel like you were living at 4,500 ft above sea level. All in all it was a somewhat insightful watch and it shows how lucky we are but also what a miracle it is that we are here anyway.
Supra Gaz
I really enjoyed reading that, I missed the show Graham was posting about, I fancied watching it. The universe is a marvel, its an interesting time to be alive and witness us (as a race) barely even begin to lift our fingers in order to scratch the surface of it. It is perhaps the most intelligent and useful thing I have ever written on this forum, I seem to be having a phase at the moment where I watch these things quite often as the other night I fell asleep watching a programme on youtube about black holes. For anyone interested youtube has a lot of decent things to watch along these lines.

AndrewOW
If VY Canis Majoris was positioned where our sun is, it's mass would extend beyond Saturn's orbit. It's rather large
