Graham1984
Sorry about making another similar thread but my car is still being funny now and then but not all the time, The American forum think the clutch starts to go in the higher gears and mine in 4th around the 4-5k mark (I know the inlet valve opens then but this is different) the revs sometimes shoot up make a whirring sound then they sink a bit and then it sorts itself out and goes as normal?!? I took mine out a minute ago and blasted it down the road and it was fine through the first 3 gear but when into 4th the same thing happened. I have tried the clutch slip test in 4th at 30mph and planted my foot and it was fine but this only seems to come and go now and then. On my return journey I kept dropping gears and raced through them and it was fine so it irks me that it is now and then. I have tried checking all the vac lines and they seem fine. It seems that 4th gear is the only gear it does it in (Now and then) although the other week when I absolutely hooned it from a dead start I did get a burnt clutch smell but I figured that was due to me being a berk and it is the only time I have ever had clutch smell since owning it. The main bit annoying me is the sodding 4th gear lag but due to how expensive clutch changes are you can appreciate me not wanting to rush out and buy and fit one although I would rather do it now before I toast the flywheel too. I did post this in an old clutch slip thread but I doubt anyone would want to look at an old thread unless we were laughing at Abz and Ed as usual. Many thanks people. Edit: Like in my link it only does it when booting it in 4th gear. Edited May 13, 2012 by Graham1984 (see edit history)

listy
Could it be that you have somehow chewed 4th in the box? Im no expert though, just an idea
Graham1984
Could it be that you have somehow chewed 4th in the box? Im no expert though, just an idea I wouldn't know to be honest as it goes into 4th fine and the problem is intermittent and somewhat points to clutch slip.I am just hoping some clever soul could say yes/no. This is why I think that as it seems familiar http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/archive/index.php/t-60581.html I was hoping that person was you

jcbt
Good old NA money pit Graham still not as expensive as tt money pits - I should know. Must admit it does sound like your clutch but the strange thing it only in 4th. Good luck with solving the issue.

That what surprises me as well but it seems that the higher gears go 1st according to some forums, Hoping somebody could clarify though..... If only I held out for a TT

listy
To be fair, when my clutch went, I think it started in higher gearsI. Now I think about it (I think alot ) I'm sure it started to slip in 4th then a couple of weeks later in 3rd. If it is the clutch, I highly recommend the Stage 4 Competition Clutch. Thats what I have now and its brilliant.
Jellybean
I had very similar symptoms ; higher gears 5th, 6th, revs sometimes shoot up; happenned once or twice but has since gone Getting it looked at towards the end of the summer! hopefully it holds up till then
Graham1984
Thanks for the advice chaps I will get it looked at even though I have less money than a crack addict at the moment, If anyone else has any suggestions or the same experiences feel free to post up as it sadly makes me feel better. Graham1984
If you find out what it is can you post up please , thanks graham Yeah of course no problem, Like everyone I hate when things are not working but I would rather sort it out once and right the first go if possible. SteveC
Usuallly when a clutch does start to show signs of being unable to cope, then they do only tend to slip under high load - i.e., in higher gears. Recently I had the same problem after I upped the boost following going BPU. Up to 1.0 Bar and no problems at all, but whilst accelerating up a hill in a high gear at around 1.3 Bar, the clutch just started to slip, so I eased up until it was sorted. (Driving with it constantly slipping at high rpm will quickly wreck a flywheel - about £400 + VAT) I jumped in at the deep end and my solution was to replace the complete clutch with an uprated one, the flywheel, spigot bearing and oil seals - not a cheap job. On reflection, I think I could have possibly got away with just replacing the stock friction plate for £100 or so; that 'may' be a relatively solution for you also... Ian C
It'll be an end-of-life clutch slipping It's probably borderline, so when everything is cold it'll slip, and when things have warmed up a bit, the tolerances close just enough to stop the slip. Clutch slip does indeed start in the higher gears as that's the highest torque loads on the gearbox due to the taller gearing. You say it only happens in 4th, but I bet you haven't tried it in 5th at peak power WOT because you've be doing 130mph or something at that point Turbos show it up due to big torque in the midrange, NA's not so much because of the peaky power delivery. It'll get worse rapidly. Get it changed
