fordy_alexsupra
Yesturday my Oil Level Warning Light turned on, I pulled over, turned engine off and checked my oil level. It was on the maximum! This morning i checked it again (after leaving the car over night) and the level is around 1mm over maximum. I drove and after 20sec the Level light came on again, so I parked side ways on a road with a hill (O/S at lowest point) and the light went out, which then when i drove off came on again shortly after. The dip stick is giving me a wrong reading or sensor may be faulty or is there a sensor that reads oil viscosity (oil change), any ideas? Oil is 10w-60 Mobil1 Extended Life, Changed around 2500km ago, i over filled it by 2mm above maximum level and i left it that way! Will the supra burn oil, I get a small puff of blue smoke at start up, after a few days of no driving?
Swampy442
10w 60 is some pretty heavy oil for the JZ engine, you only need a 40 grade. The level switch is just a float and they have been known to go bad, not to difficult to change. And the puff of smoke is probably going to be your valve stem seals

Nic
Just a thought is it the orange warning light that is coming on or the red light?
dude
Ive seen loads of these level indicators start to fail now and they are big money, just rely on the dipstick, BTW my car runs 10/60 fully synthetic
fordy_alexsupra
Nic, Amber, if it was red pressure, big cry. dude, Yeh ill clean up the wire contact and check. If no luck ill just unplug and hope I dont have a mass oil leak; well that is what i though had happend. +1 on 10/60 cheers

I considered Castrol Edge 10W60 as I had a bit left over from my old M5, used to run my P1 and still run my RS Turbo on it as well with no probs. Just wondering. Digsy
The oil level warning light coming on for no reason is also sometimes the first symptom of a knackered alternator.
fordy_alexsupra
The oil level warning light coming on for no reason is also sometimes the first symptom of a knackered alternator. Iv read that before on a old thread. I have a voltmeter how can I check the output on the alternator and what should the output be?
Tricky-Ricky
Personally i think a correctly working oil level sensor is the best thing since sliced bread, after it being the only thing that alerted me to a failed front main seal, in time to prevent engine failure due to lack of oil,Personallyy i would replace no matter what the cost, it could save your engine. I actually ended up adding a super bright LED so that if anything similhappenedend again, i would have a chance to save the engine, i only wish more car had level sensors fitted as std, rather than just a low pressure light, by which time iusuallylly far to late. fordy_alexsupra
Agree with you on this one! Why did your main steal blow? Im checking the sensor now going to take it off and clean it, wire connections too! Iv had my under engine tray off for a while now and we'v had heavy rain
Tricky-Ricky
Std reason, worn oil pump, if you search you will find a few posts on the subject, there is a write up with some pics and description of my old pump, and the reasons for it.
fordy_alexsupra
Still shows up warning after clean connections. It is to awkward to take off fully on my back need a ramp

I'l see if I can find it and upload it. When my alternator went, the oil level light would come on but then go out when the engine was above a certain RPM. That RPM went higher and higher pver the course of a few days until the oil light was on almost all the time, then I started to get other lights (ABS. catalyst temp) and ironically the night the alternator actually failed. the battery warning light finally came on. Try revving your engine and see if the light goes out.

If you can upload a procedure to check out the alterntor and voltage regulator that would be great I had rev'ed and raced the engine but no luck, it only goes out when I stop on a hill sideways (horizontal) :S
Digsy
it only goes out when I stop on a hill sideways (horizontal) :S I reckon it'll be the oil level sensor in your case then

Swampy442
Yeah, its not very big either.
